Default Whats up with these caps (monitor 10's)

Well, I pulled the crossover out of the monitor 10's (series II) to verify what was in there prior to upgrading the crossovers. To be honest, I am not sure what I came up with....

I found the 12uf cap and 2.7ohm resistor stacked, as well as the 27uf cap as expected.

The 16uf cap that is supposed to be mylar per the schematic though appears to be another standard 12uf cap as well as a much larger 4.4uf cap. I could be mistaken, but here is a pic of the best I could see.....

    Any suggestions?

Maybe they ran out of 16uf's that day.

You have the SL2500 tweeter in your 10's?

    yep. (SL2500).

Just seems odd to use a standard 12uf coupled with a rather huge (in comparison) 4.4uf cap.... Also from looking at the ends of the cap, the 4.4 has seen better days. Just want to make sure I am purchasing the correct components.

Do you like the sound of the 2500? If not, here's your chance to use a different tweeter. Keep in mind, you'll also have to change inductors.

If you like the 2500, just upgrade what you have there, 12, 16, and 27.

EDIT: That 4.4 isn't THAT big. You should see the sizes of some aftermarket caps.

I actually like the sound of the 2500 a lot. (enough that I may have to look for some SDA's that use it)

I plan to use sonicaps to upgrade (along with a mills resistor). I was going to go with a less expensive cap from parts express, but I got a good deal on the Monitor 10's so even with spending $150 or so on the caps, I will still be under $200 for the speakers. (not to mention the fact, that I just enjoy the hell out of listening to them... :) )

BTW - I was just thinking the 4.4 was huge compared to the 12uf on top of it...

Gotcha...film or mylar vs electrolytic. Just wait till you see a 16uf Sonic Cap. :D You may have to get creative with cap placement. You'll probably need some sort of wire to extend the leads back down to the board. Do you have a hot glue gun? It probably wouldn't hurt to also have some zip ties on hand. Be sure to take pics.

The SL2500 was never used in the SDA series.

Not trying to tell you what to do,,I got carried away with some monitor 7's,,,be sure to leave enough room/space to get those puppies back in the cabinet, as I had a cap extend a little too far off the board,of course,,stupid me did not realize this until it came time to put them back in :o. Good luck,,I think that you are going to be pleased when you are finished.

Crap - I thought I had seen some in 3.1tl's... Oh well, I think they use the same upgrade tweeter if I ever try to do a vintage home theater. I do like the sound of the 2500 though....
