Default Solid wood caps. For those who have done it.

Well I went ahead and got some 1 inch thick ash boards to replace my caps and yes I know it swells and contracts but I couldnt find a reasonable size or price MDF board. The guy even cut the boards to size for me for free.(ebay seller) I even got it for a good price.$20.00 + 21.80 shipping. It was very heavy wood too. Can anyone recomend a good streak free naturall oak color stain.I was planning on spraying on a poly to get a nice even coat unless anyone can suggest a better way to do it.Like F1nut. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=003

Any pigmented wiping stain will get the job done. You might want to consider Minwax's wiping poly finish.

You might want to investigate using a dye stain, they are more transparent and really penetrate well. Dye type stains CAN raise the grain but as a rule don't contain the waxy stuff found in a lot of the oil type stains, this gives more options for finish coats (no adhesion problems). If you can find a shop to spray your parts with a catalyzed lacquer topcoat you'll have the closest thing to an indestructable finish. Good luck !! gdb

While I agree that dye stains are the only way to go, it's all I use. For the average Joe, they are not all that user friendly, hence my pigmented wiping stain suggestion, which are basically idiot proof.

As for cat lac, while a notch above nitro, for an indestructable finish there are better choices.

I like a wipe on poly finish over a spray. It is easier to apply and you avoid any orange peel finish or runs. You just have to apply more coats as it wipes on more thinly than sprays. To limit swelling and contracting of the wood, you should seal the whole piece to prevent moisture from getting in.

GOOD POINT jon! both faces should receive the same treatment to equalize the seal and avoid cupping !:)

I'm sure there is someone closer that could do the job for you. Check the local yellow pages.
