1.2TL's?

I picked up these speakers about a year ago, and just figured they were the 1.2TL's. However the other day when I was was playing with them, I noticed the 1.2TL model is no where to be found on them. Did polk make any speakers that were identical in looks to the 1.2's and are actually something else? Or are they just not marked 1.2TL? Here is a picture of the back of one of them, hopefully someone can recognize them! Oh and I am still in need of an interconnect cable, so if anyone has one, please let me know!!

Looks like they are the original SDA SRS as they are not marked 1.2 or 1.2TL. I wasn't able to really tell what the differences were from the website, are there any?

Some, for whatever reason, just say 1.2
You can easily tell the SDA SRS from the later 1.2's and 1.2tl's by the front crossover plates bolt pattern. The 1.2's have 8 bolts in a rectangular pattern and 1 in the center.
The color of the tweeters is the giveaway on the difference between the 1.2 and the 1.2tl. The 1.2's have the 2000 tweeter, and they are murky, yellowish.
The l.2tl's have the 3000 tweeter which is silverish/metallic looking.

*PS, a picture of the fronts of the speakers, with the grilles off would make it easier to help identify them.

You can't always rely on the label. My 1.2's are labeled "SDA SRS XXXX" but have the pin/blade interconnect and the SDA drivers are stamped SRS 1.2. I questioned Ken at Polk some time ago about this and this was his response:

"Unfortunately we didn't keep very good records of serial numbers and their corresponding model numbers. In fact, there's none. The only real way would be to simply remove one of the SDA 6.5" drivers from the cabinet and look at the label on the back. If you see MW6511, then it is a "1.2" if it is MW6503 then it is a "standard" SRS. This is one of the outside SDA drivers."

Unfortunately, when it comes to SDA's, the only way to be sure of what you have is if you fall into one of these categories:

1. You purchased the speakers new from a dealer and you received a receipt verifying the model number.

2. You purchased the speakers from the original owner who has a receipt verifying the model number.

If you do not fall into either of the two categories above, you must do some research. Positive identification is complicated by the following:

1. Polk would use up parts from previous production runs on new models. This is why some SDA 1.2TL's have SDA 1.2 labels. Another example is, as trubluluc said, the 1.2's crossover plate has 8 bolts in a rectangular pattern and 1 in the center. The original SDA SRS's crossover plate has 8 bolts in a rectangular pattern and 5 bolts in the center. However, some of the 1.2's made early in its production run used leftover crossover plates from the SRS.

2. Some owners would install the wrong drivers and tweeters if a repair was required or in a misguided attempt to "upgrade" their speakers.

The schematics for all three versions (SRS, SRS 1.2, and SRS 1.2TL), as well as a chart listing the driver and tweeter differences between the various models is given in this thread.

The original SDA SRS had end caps made of laminated strips of solid oak and it used a blade/blade interconnect cable. The SRS 1.2 and SRS 1.2TL had end caps made of oak or walnut veneer over MDF with edge banding and they both used a pin/blade interconnect cable.

I bought my SDA-SRS speakers new in Japan (military) in September 1987. They have traveled with me ever since, through multiple moves in their original boxes. My original midrange drivers are stamped with the date April 1987. I agree with all that DarqueKnight has said except for the the one caveat that the SDA-SRS (besides the solid oak) were also made with solid walnut end caps. This is what appear to be on mine. Can anyone else verify this?

Doesn't work that way, either. The original owner of my 1.2TLs bought and paid for 1.2s, but was delivered 1.2TLs because they changed over right after he signed the paperwork. Everything, including the speakers, say "1.2" on them and that's what he assumed they were all this time.

You are correct:

"SDA SRS and SDA 1-As are available in a beautiful hand-oiled oak or walnut finish." Polk Audio 1985 brochure.

"The top and side panels are wood, in a choice of oak or walnut finish..." Stereo Review, November 1985, page 88.

"Some of the earlier SRS's had oak or walnut end caps made of laminated boards." SDA Compendium 2nd Ed., page 25.

Then it would seem that the only positive identification method for SDA's is to take them apart.:(

That's pretty much what happened with me, also. When I ordered my SRS's in Sept. 1988 at the now defunct Stereo City in Augusta, GA, I was unaware of an upgrade from SRS to SRS 1.2, as all my paperwork said SDA SRS. Apparently Polk was just beginning to ship 1.2's and I got the "latest and greatest" 1.2 version. :)

Very Hard to find.

I needed one for my 1.2TL's because the seller did not have it.

I bought a Pair of SDA-1C's for $500 and stole the cable and then I sold the 1C's for $400 ;)

The second pin/blade cable I found I paid $75 for it.

I had to make my own pin-blade cable as I couldn't find an original. However, since I used top parts, I feel mine is superior to stock anyway.

Bought my SRS's in 1988 and they were discribed as SRS on all the paperwork. I didn't discover I actually have SRS 1.2's until last year. Mine say SRS, have the 8-bolt/1 bolt XO plate, solid wood incaps, blade-pin connector and 6503/6511 drivers.
