Default McIntosh system - Too rich for my blood

but pretty. Auction Saturday morning, they'll stop at 1:00 for this system.

I was thinking about going up and trying to steal one, but after they told me they've gotten numerous hits from out-of-state....sigh....

I've always wanted to try McIntosh gear, but I'd only be interested in their tubes. Maybe one day...

That's a great amp, I wouldn't go crazy over the rest though.

Looks like one of those flip around your cassette in mid-air Nakamichi on top.

The amp was what got me itchy, but I wouldn't throw the pre- out of bed either.:D

Any particular reason why only the tubes?

Because the McIntosh tube gear was (and is) hardware for the ages. The solid state stuff is... OK (EDIT: and quite expensive). Even the early, autoformer-coupled solid state stuff is pretty rough sounding (I say this as an MC-2100 owner). I cannot vouch for later autoformer-coupled gear.

Find an MC-225 (e.g.) and you'll be set for life.

    IMNSHO of course.

That's quite an interesting opinion on the SS stuff.:D My dealer let me bring home a pair of 501's and a pair of 275 Mk IV's to try out. I was stoked to try the tubes. While they were honestly a very fine amp, they appeared a bit soft to me. I've never heard the earlier auto-former amps and you may be correct. I prefered the sound of the 501's in my room. A lot more punch in the mids and mid bass to my ear.

So I guess that is why they make both tube and SS. Makes all of us happy!

Mr. Hardy, I agree with Hawk. Listen to one of their newer amps, even a 2nd gen SS, they're much more refined. I still do enjoy listening to the old ones though, they're great for poorly recorded music. ;) MC-250, 2105, 2125, 7270, and 126 owner.
