Always go back and manually set the distance, crossover points, and SPL levels after running Audyssey, especially the sub level.

I encourage you to try this and keep using Audyssey. The equalization that it applies is really where the benefit is.

According to a thread over at AVS, there is a poster there who works for Audyssey, since Ausyssey takes time domain into consideration, the distances it sets are correct.

Personally, I never liked what Audyssey did to the sound with my 885, I left it off.

I upgraded the firmware on my 805 the other day so I had to start from scratch (now I can't find that damn mic), anyway I also have the SMS-1 so I started it first and I swear that with the Audessey set to off its ignoring my crossover settings based on what the SMS is showing me....

Audyssey detects acoustic distance... However, if you're getting a huge discrepancy in subwoofer distance, you may have an acoustic issue causing it. For instance, my first run through detected my subwoofer 5+ feet off from physical distance. Moved it three inches away from the wall and on the next run it detected at its actual distance.

Contrary to what billbillw says, once you fix any acoustic issues in the room, you shouldn't need to change the distance/delays it comes up with (though you can spot-check cross-speaker imaging if you have DVE, since it has between-speaker tones that make setting distance/delay easy). You can set more reasonable crossover points (because some implementations, especially Onkyo detect any speaker that goes below 80Hz as full range), but don't ever set a speaker to a lower crossover than what was detected because Audyssey has only equalized down to that point.

I could go on and on about the proper method of calibrating with Audyssey, but I'd just be repeating what I wrote for the TX-SR705 FAQ at AVS.

If you have any specific questions after reading that, let me know.

The concept has been around for at least 5 years. The general term is "automatic room setup". Audyssey is a brand name for one version of the technology, kinda like Dolby or Faroudja. No, its not on all receivers. You must get a step or two above the entry level to the this feature. Also, not all manufacturers use Audyssey. Yamaha, HK, and Sony have their own varieties. Denon, Marantz, NAD, and Onkyo use Audyssey.

Audyssey and other automatic room setup variations do more than just adjust the SPL of each channel. They adjust size and distance (delay), as well as per-channel equalization. Even with Audyssey it's still useful to use an SPL meter to make fine adjustments and double-check the auto-configuration, especially for speaker size.
