Wow, I had never thought about the danger risks of carrying around a bottle of nitrous. I've always been a fan of n/a, but this seals it!

Any ideas as to why it happened? How frequent are such occurrences?

How does that happen? Leave it sitting in the sun? That bottle must have had a fatal flaw.

It should of had a blow off valve??? Maybe it was an old style bottle or the blow off valve malfunctioned.


Either way he should have known better. It looks like he might have let it sit in the sun. The hotter it gets the more pressure it builds. The bottle can only take so much.....


Safe operating pressure is around 900psi.... I would imagine it well over 2000psi.


At least know one was hurt.

Yea, it shouldve had some type of blow off valve. My guess is that it was overfilled/left in sun, and someone took out the blow off valve and just plugged it.

Glad no one was hurt, that thing wouldve killed people inside the car had there been someone in it.

I've heard of it happening once before in a guys garage. Dont think i ever read what the cause of it was.

Most likely a bottle warmer was left on.

The sun doesn't heat the bottle up enough to do that. Leave a bottle warmer on and in a hot, black car, parked in the sun and then, yeah, the bottle will blow up but not in the sun by itself.

Also, I don't know how much a pressure valve would have helped. If the bottle is off, the valve is closed. Unless the pressure pop-off valve is installed before the valve on the bottle, it won't do squat. Usually the pop-off valves I've seen are for when the bottle is on and the car is racing.

But hey, bottles are for babies. ;)

I have yet to use nitrous and my fastest car I ever built ran all motor with a carburetor and a fuel pump the size of a softball.

I could have finished the whole phrase but this is a family oriented forum and I refrained.

I'm surprised like you that they would cover it. But, really, on what basis could they deny the claim? It's not illegal to have nitrous. It's illegal to use nitrous on the street. Whether he used it illegally or not (haha) is beside the point...it was parked when it happened, so nothing illegal was taking place. Right? What am I missing to the insurance company's side?

Hahaha, i can only imagine what my car would look like if my bottles blew.... But, i've got pressure guages on both of them, and blowdown, so i think i'll be ok.

But.... two 10lb bottles going at once would be interesting in a stripped out Celica. He must have had some serious pressure in there.... i've had mine at 1200-1250psi without any problems, just makes for a heck of a kick in the butt.

You have to tell the insurance company you have a bottle.
And god help you if it's open, especially if there's an accident involving another car.

You forget it's an insurance company and they can deny a claim for any reason. Many moons ago, I had a car get stolen and it took over 3 months but they denied the claim (it was "processing"). I got a lawyer and we got all the way to the court date and they extended it for needing more research time, blah blah. Eventually, they ended up finding a way to get MY lawyer to stop taking my calls... funny how that industry works.

Sucks about the car though! Guess he shouldn't put the bottle warmer on a constant power source and have it shut off when the car's not on. Find a new power source, easy fix. Ooooops, was that my car outside blowing up?
