Default Wanna see a Magic Trick...?

So tomorrow I have to take the money allocated for my new SDA's and fix my automobile. Watch as all the "pristine, upgraded, mint condition, selling at incredibly low price's" SDA's come out of the woodwork here in Southern California. Get ready the deals are gonna jump out at ya! Best of luck and I hope I'm wrong. Keep on Polkin'....

My truck needs all 4 tires and an alignment... $650

My house needs 7 new windows... $994

Every time I make a non-essential purchase, I feel guilty as all hell. But, you have to have a little fun or you'll die of stress.

How the heck can it cost that much?! What size are they? The 31" tires for my Cherokee are about $70-$80 a piece...

    You buy some cheap-ass tires?

I have decent (but certainly not expensive) tires on my Subaru that were 116 each from TireRack.

The cheapest tires for mine start at $110. That's just 17' for a Mustang GT. I'm hoping there will be some sales for Day after Thanksgiving.

I'm sure they're not the greatest, but I dont' think they're junk, either. Bridgestone 275/55r15. I believe they're Bridgestone Deuler H/T's.

    You should consider some Michelin's.

My tires are 245/75R16's. I was looking at Hercules Tires... I believe All Country A/T's. If I'm not mistaken, they are a USA-made tire.

My former neighbor owns a tire shop and that's all he sells. If he didn't trust them, he'd never sell them.

+1...I had just replaced the rubber on my 96 Nissan p/u with some Michelin light truck tires a month before it was stolen. It was great while it lasted. When it's time to replace tires on the Toy it's going to be Michelin.

Tires for 15" wheels are the cheapest tires you can buy. 16s are a little more expensive, and they go up from there. Thats in part why. Plus you figure in road hazard warranty, mounting and balancing, tax. I believe mine were around $550 for all 4.

Michelin is the cream of the crop. You can tell by the # of air holes [or rubber "fingers" that stick out] that help with the aeration of the original tire design during the mold process. The more that you have, the lower the quality and the more issues you have with the tire design and it is also indicative of the issues the manufacturer had with the build of the tire. All of those "fingers" indicate where the tire design had an initial failure that had to be punctured to release excess air. A well designed tire does not need many air outlets.

Michelin will have the least amount.

    Hence the price. ;)

I took Michelins off my SUV that had 1/2 of their tread left and put Bridgestone's on because they were just plain terrible in the snow and ice. I've used Firestone and Bridgestone for years, but performance tires (Potenza REO50) and SUV all season. Not sure what is up with those Michelins (can't remember the model) but they were really scary in the snow. (couldn't steer or stop)

What does mold design have to do with tire design performance?

I know that Michelin makes some great tires (particularly performance tires) but for me there isn't a compelling reason to ditch my Potenzas for the extra $$'s. I might try Dunlop's for next year's track season just to see how much money I can save and still stay on the track.

Oh boy. Dunlops are what were on my Jeep when we bought it. They were flat out SCARY! They could barely grip when it was dry, but you had NO traction if it was wet out at all. I'm not really exaggerating much either. It was VERY easy with those tires to touch the throttle mid-turn in the rain and accidentally initiate a slide. Stopping in the wet was bad, too.

Now, in hindsight, I was a new driver then...so it was scary...now, I think I could have had a good bit of fun with those...:D :p

EDIT - I had NO clue what those Dunlops were, as we got rid of them pretty quickly. However, out of curiosity, I just looked through some OLD pics of the Jeep when it was still wearing the Dunlops. In case you were interested, they were Dunlop A/T Radial Rovers.

Heh heh... I fellow weekend racer bought some of the Dunlop Direzza's this season and said they are fairly decent at the track but not as good as the Bridgestone Potenzas. We will see what kind of deals there are over the winter.

Of course, now I have the winter tires on which have much less dry grip, so I need to be careful to save the rubber and not leave too much on the road screwing around.

Judging a tire BRAND based on an experience with a single TIRE is kind of silly. At least as far as performance goes - durability and reliability are maybe a different deal. But even minor differences within the same MODEL, let alone brand, can be night and day in a tire. My car came stock with a set of Bridgestone Potenza "performance" tires, which were great in dry weather and turned into slip-n-slides in the snow. I bought some all-weather Potenzas - same brand, even same model line, just a different "flavor" - and it's a completely different experience. I love the tires I have on there now.

Summer tires usually harden in the cold, making traction worse.

Snow tires are made to be softer in the winter months.
