Default Guess im not getting it

I was bidding on a box for a receiver I have because this one is in a lil nicer shape than mine is and if I ever sell it I wanted to offer a nice original box to go with it. Heres a link to the auction and a pic of the receiver I have in its original box there is lots of writing etc on the outside of mine even though you cant see it from the pic.

    What's wrong with that?

Look at it his way, at least you'll save on shipping. It's only $22.00

Yeah it's more than im willing to pay. I bid up to $151.00 and I was done when I got home and seen it at $360.00 I know the boxes are rare and hard to come by. But after a point what you gain by offering a receiver with a nice box goes away when the box costs too much.

Actually, the ad title is somewhat misleading:

    PIONEER SX-1980 ORIGINAL BOX & PACKING~HARD TO FIND~70s

I'm guessing the winner thinks he is getting a vintage receiver in an original box. I was always surprised by the number of people who absolutely did not want to read an ad. It was always irksome to get 1 million questions about one of my eBay listings when I had provided very, very detailed information in the listing. It was always "oh, I just saw the title and the pictures and really didn't read the ad".

For those who knew they were bidding on a box, I guess they don't know they can have a custom box made by a packing and shipping company that is much better quality than the ratty original box in the listing.

I needed a shipping box when I sold one of my SVS CS Ultra subwoofers (41" tall x 17" diameter). A double-wall corrugated box with form-fitting foam padding cost $24.53.

It's like the XBOX BOX ebay listings. OOPS!

That also reminds me of someone selling an early 90's Lexus ES300 on ebay a few years ago. It was like they would say leather interior, no reserve, power windows, no reserve, extra, clean, no reserve, almost like new, no reverse! But they weren't kind enough to make it very clear that the cars transmission had NO REVERSE. Ah, camouflage.

I think its more than the title that's misleading, the listing is classified with the following:
Item Specifics - Home Audio Receivers
    Type: Stereo Receivers (2-Channel)
    Product Type : Audio
    Type : RECEIVER
    Number of Channels: 2 (Stereo)
I don't know many boxes that are considered Audio or have 2 channels. I think this will end up as a negative for the seller simply because the ad was somewhat deceptive or misleading. HOWEVER, you would have to be blind or ignorant to not really catch on or read into the details beyond the category it was classified under. The Description does say the auction is only for a box and only a box is pictured, but it is mis-categorized.

Its amazing what some people will sell, and even more amazing what people will buy. 31 bids on that box. Based on the bidders, none of them were eBay newbs-so they must know something special about that box. The last bidder even made his last manual bid less than a minute before the end of the auction but had placed a bid 5 days prior-so it was not a last minute impulse bid either.

Agreed on the title being somewhat misleading but even if you only looked at the pics you would see there are only pics of a box and packing material no receiver.

No doubt that you could buy a better built box but as far as a collector is concerned it isnt the same as having an "original" and they are willing to pay a premium for it. My thought when bidding was simply knowing that when an auction has the original box and packing they always go for more than a receiver in the same condition without one and seem to attract a wider range of bidders and would most likely be very easy to recoup a couple hundred bucks.

the box is a bargain, lets see I paid 100 bucks a person to go into a place in your neighborhood so I could spend more dough which ended up costing me 1 large, I got to walk around all day until my feet hurt, my back hurt and my head hurt, I got to stand in endless lines experiencing wife's and husband's arguing, rude foreign tourists arguing, and thousands of little ones each believing they were special and deserved what ever other one had.

So I could of saved 640 if I had bought the box, put a fairy fricken princess sticker on it, wrapped it in pretty pink paper with a bow gave it to my little darlling telling her it was her personal magic kingdom box.

Come to think of it, Given the Box Buyer knows its a Box they may have a special Box party already planned for the Box. What would be really cool is if they had some other Boxes already to join in the party or even the ultimate Twin Box to the new Box.
