    Thumbs up Mongol

If you don't mind subtitles, but like history, different cultures and great film making, check out Mongol in either BD or SD (great transfer). Stunning cinematography of the Russian/Chinese steppes, roles played by Mongols :D, no western actors, language is Mongolian. It was up for an Oscar in 2007, but was released over here about a month ago. Even my wife loved it. Strong characters, excellent acting, simple but effective story telling make this very easy to understand without the subs.

BTW...Genghis Khan had a tough life :D. This was supposed to be the first of a trilogy, but might be the only one. It's about the road to becoming the Great Khan and his great wife, Borte.

For those who like something different.

    I enjoyed it.

That's me :D. My wife doesn't care for subtitles, but all of the recent ones I've seen, once into the film a bit, I almost forget about the subtitles and I think I can actually fluently understand the language (even though I really can't :o ).
    I'll check this out-Thanks!

That's pretty much me too. If the movie isn't too dialog driven. I tried this French movie that got great reviews...something about a midget and a big blonde super model , but the dialog was so fast I couldn't keep up with the subs...had to give up...I'm told I missed a good one. Luckily, the Mongols are laconic sorts ;).

Ron, let me recommend another movie with subtitles. It's a Danish movie called "After The Wedding". A little English mixed in. A VERY powerful, emotional drama. Not for everybody but my wife and I liked it enough to buy it and add it to our collection.

I also liked Mongol a lot; different "mold" type of movie. I wish there were more like this.

FYI, the BluRay version of this is on sale right now ( thru 12/31) at Amazon for $9.99

Of course I ordered it last year when it was $22 and still haven't yet had a chance to watch it - Oh well.
