In case anyone in the Philly area cares. The sony store at the chelsea premium outlet has their S300 factory refurbed blue ray players on sale for 109.00, usual sale price is 179.

I dont know a damn thing about BR, i guessed HdDVD :o, but I figured 110.00 was worth a shot. Now I'm off to research what is said about them, something that should be done before buying

I have the BDPS300 and have a lot of problems with it. Movies freeze, the player locks up. I do have the latest firmware. I tried to watch Wall-e tonight and it froze up so bad I couldn't even eject the disk or turn the unit off. I had to get Sony on the phone and all that they could figure was to unplug the unit. I don't really think the unit is defective as most movies it plays ok. Based on all the firmware updates I've had to do I just don't think this model has what it takes to play the latest movies. Oh, and if it is broken you have to send it to PA to get it fixed. That sucks that there are no local Sony authorized shops.

Thanks for sharing your exp Polkitup. After browsing through various forums, it appears you are not alone. I'm gonna hold off cracking the seal on this thing, while I make up my mind to keep it or let prices for the newer models continue to free fall :)

I have the opposite reaction...had mine for a year and for a cheap BD player, there's not much to complain about. I've had 1 or 2 disks lockup, initially the wait time was unbelieveable, but the video performance has been stellar. After the last FW update the load times have been cut by 50-90% depending on disk and it now decodes Dolby True HD via analog. Also, it's a sweet music transport via analog once you get the right cables. For $100, it's not perfect but I recommend it.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE
