I just read that she was born and raised about 20 miles from where I live in S.C.!
Apparently, she wasn't too fond of the area, (because she was bi-racial),

Agreed. Incredible actress. A true triple threat -- dancer, singer, actress -- like so many entertainers back in those days.
And she had the guts to speak out against the Vietnam War, so she was unable to get work in the USA for several years thereafter (so much for freedom of speech).
