Trouble reloading backed up data from DVD's

I backed up all my documents, pictures, videos, etc on four DVD's yesterday before reformatting my desktop. Everything went well, I've reformatted and labeled my HD's how I want them, etc. Now I'm ready to put all my data back on the computer.

I loaded a few folders from my documents back onto my computer with no problem. However, I've been trying to no avail to reload my pictures from DVD to my My Pictures folder. I selected all the folders first, and it said it'd take 80 minutes and then got hung up. Then I tried doing it just a folder at the time. Hung up. Then I tried it file by file (picture by picture) and it hung up again. And when it hangs up, the computer locks up and I have to reboot.

What the heck is going on? How am I SUPPOSED to get files from a DVD onto my HD??

Your not going to like this but rule #2 about making a backup of data that is not availalble anywhere else, is to ensure that you test the restore before a disaster occurs. :o
Or at least let the software you used for backup do a verification after it backed it all up.

Just FYI Rule #1 for backups? Is actually doing them ;) So you get a star :D

Now on to your issue;
Have you tried to access the files (open the pics) directly from the DVD?
Or tried to copy them to a different computer?
Are the Hard drives you are copying to internal or external drives?
Is the issue your having with only one of the DVDs? Or is some of the 'bad' DVD readable?
And your saying the computer actually locks up? Nothing else works?

Thanks for the prompt reply. Sorry mine took so long; I was really busy with packing and driving back out to school then a LONG first day at it again.

Hahaha, that's a great first rule. Just a shame I didn't go by it. :( I can't believe it, but I actually hadn't tried any of the other discs before I made this post. The other discs work just fine, so I guess there was just an error in recording that one disc. I'll still play around with it some at some point and see if I can't get SOME of the pictures off it.

there is a free program called recover my photos. you might try running it on the dvd. it has worked to save some corrupted or deleted pictures for me before.

Try reading the disks in a different machine with only a dvd-reader, rather than reader-burner.
