Audysey Setup Question

I just received my new Polk RTI A5's(sound awesome!) and when I run the audysey setup it lists my front and center chanel speakers as Full. I know you are supposed to set them to either small (which my receiver doesn't do) or a smaller HZ rating. I've switched it from Full on both the front and center to 80 hz and my surrounds to 80 hz as well. I set the subwoofer to 80hz too. Is this a good setup? It also set my sub to a -12db....now that my fronts are not set to FULL shouldn't I bump up the sub? I mean with it that low I can't even hear my sub. I have it set to a +5 for music which sounds good but is still a little low for movies. Am I close to the mark or should I tweak some more? I've also got the crossover on the sub set to around 80 hz. I'm still learning about all this. Thanks for any help given.

Which AVR do you have?

For your setup setting everything to small is fine. The reason Aud sets your speakers to large is because they are able to achieve 40hz. XO at 80hz is a good starting point.

Now for the sub. In most cases the reason Aud lowers the output compared to mains is most likely you have some peaks at the lower freqs that need to be EQed. Aud does not do the lower freqs very well. Aud is trying to lower the sub channel in an attempt to address your peaks but that makes the already flat and dips freqs even lower.

Suggest getting a Radio Shack SPL and play test tone from AVR and match the sub channel level with mains.

My sub is able to EQ 1 filter which is all I need. Once I have my peak lowered and run Aud it sets my sub exactly the same as the mains, balanced output.

Thanks for the info...I've a Onkyo 606. I've been doing some reading and it's been suggested to raise the frequency to the maximum setting on the sub during the audyesey setup. I did that and had the gain set a 12 o'clock. Then been adjusting the volume by raising the db levels in the reciever setting. The setting after I did this was a -4 db instead of -12 db I've settled on a +5 db for best sound. I have the lfe crossover in my receiver set to 80 hz along with all my other speakers. My surrounds are a onkyo htib brand and the lowest frequency they show is 100. Is putting the crossover to 80 on them going to hurt any? The surrounds don't go that low anyways do they? Thanks.

No, if the speakers go down to 100hz and having the AVR set to 80hz will not hurt them but if your 606 allows you, you could set it to 100hz for the rears.

Yeah I'll try and do that....what I meant about the surrounds is the specs on them are 100 hz but I can set them to 80 in the receiver and that's what I was wondering if it would damage anything. Thanks.

I asked that question on AVS and the answer was that changing your crossover after the Audyssey calibration doesn't affect anything as far as the efficacy of the EQ. I have a Velodyne SMS-1 that I integrate with my subs which allows me to see what the Audyssey does and I get pretty good results. I do use the SMS-1 after the fact but keep in mind that the SMS-1 only allows for one sweet spot while the Audyssey calibrates for multiple positions. Anyhoo - even with Audyssey I highly recommend the SMS-1.

I have the Onkyo 605 with RM10s.
I have the RM10s set to 100Hz crossover and the Sub at 120Hz and this seems to work well for me.
