true hd audio

Who out there has compared true hd audio to dts and dolby digital.Is there that much of a difference.I am ready to make a move to blue ray but my pre amp does not process true hd audio.I can pick up a sony 550 that decodes all formats and would send it to my pre amp thru analog cables.Any thoughts out there?

The newer formats (Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA) IMO are way better than Dolby Digital, and the older DTS. Over the weekend I watched a few Blu-Rays in DTS HD MA 7.1, and was blown away by the SQ. You hear things you never even knew were there before on a regular DD track. I also watched an SD DVD upscalled on my PS3 because they didn't have it in Blu-Ray and there was a noticable difference. IMO it is worth making the upgrade to Blu-Ray, and a capable receiver/BD player for the newer formats.

I dont have the golden ear for this stuff like a lot of people here do; I notice a difference but only a slight one. I can hear it when i switch between them back to back, but if i just walked into a room playing one or the other I probably couldn't tell you which it is. I also noticed that on some blu-rays the difference is less noticeable (to me) than others. I'd say you try and listen for yourself before spending a lot of money on an upgrade if you aren't sure.

I wasn't expecting to hear such a difference between the core DD and DTS, but DTS Master audio is incredible. I really noticed a difference in sound quality. i think for the $300 or so that the Sony S-550 goes for, it's a big step up in audio quality over standard DVD's.

get a blu ray player that has analog outs if your receiver doesn't have HDMI connections.

I've seen a lot of folks debate this. I personally can tell a huge difference in Dolby True HD and DTS Master audio ove DD and DTS, at least on my setup. To me the real advantage to blu ray is the better audio. I tell people all the time that there is a bigger difference in audio than video when comparing BluRay to sd dvds. The blu ray picture is nice, but I LOVE the hd audio formats, especially for audio concert DVDs. I think a lot of it has to do with one's particuliar setup.

I'm wondering from a few people who hear a huge difference, what kind of setups do you have? I'm just running an Onkyo 806 with no external amp, and rti a line of speakers (a5 mains and a6 center), and like I said I can notice a slight difference depending on the disc, but if I was in a room playing one or the other I wouldn't know which it was (where as with video quality I could tell in a second). I'm wondering if it would make the difference bigger if I had better components- an external amp, etc. Or maybe I just don't have the ear for it.
