Default WTH is going on with Google?

"Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!"

Anyone having a issue with google where you can't get to sites? Literally EVERY site I try and go to I get the above warning.

Anyone have any idea what is going on? Basic research indicates this is a new google thing for sites that may have malware...but I am getting it with every site I go to.

I literally can't google the information I need because it blocks every site.

    Example:

you're right. something eff'up with google search engine, or, it got infected with a massive giant slug.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

False alarm, everything is back to normal.

That was quick. Here I was hoping someone broke the internet.

Seriously...do people have nothing better to do than to hack Google, spread viruses/malware/spyware, etc.? If it is indeed a hack, I hope they go to jail.

Probably there are people out there hacking Citibank right now... ridiculous!

Actually there was an alien ship reported over the city this morning ( Googles headquarters right down the road from here ) and " It's the end of the world as we know it " was playing on the radio when I noticed the problem :D

Guess they needed us all offline for a bit while they checked out our information ;)

I saw it too, transiently, but since this computer is running Ubuntu and I was searching for help on XSane, I figured anything was possible :-P

BTW, I don't suppose if any of you good people would know why I've lost the option of monochrome scanning in XSane, or how to get it back again... would you?
    all the best,

Buncha cynics around here, it's possible (and likely) that someone at GOogle was upgrading something and just messed it up. Much moreso than the idea that someone hacked into Google and they fixed it in less than an hour.

I figured they had a big ol list of sites that were marked as possibly malware, and then everything else on no malware. New guy probably hit a wrong button and switched the two, and it took a little while to figure it out.

I've done it before w/ my router, and IMO it seems to be the simplest explanation...Occam's razor style.

And GOogle has explained themselves : human error.

    http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/...mputer-on.html

Google flags search results with the message "This site may harm your computer" if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. We do this to protect our users against visiting sites that could harm their computers. We maintain a list of such sites through both manual and automated methods. We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to come up with criteria for maintaining this list, and to provide simple processes for webmasters to remove their site from the list.

We periodically update that list and released one such update to the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here's the human error), the URL of '/' was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and '/' expands to all URLs. Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Google has been screwing up for me for like the last week now...I click on a link and it takes me to something completely different. It doesn't seem to be doing it quite as much anymore though.

Doesn't mean its necessarily an issue with Google (unless its widespread). Could be an issue with your computer or your router. Any takeover of you DNS server (typically the DNS server settings in your router) could easily point you to sites of new nefarious DNS server's choosing.

That's entirely possible too. My computer isn't exactly state of the art. It was a hand me down from my parents when they upgraded their computer a few years ago. I think they bought this one in...1999-2000 or so. It's in need of replacement...

When I say an issue with your computer or router, I mean that you may have a malware/virus infection or somebody could have hacked into your router and changed your DNS settings.

Google gets squirrelly for 40 minutes on a Saturday morning when everyone is supposed to be hungover, and it's news. . .so, it is much more likely that the problem is on your end CC. Get hijackthis and post the results on a computer forum, and they will help you.

I don't know...it hasn't really been doing it today, and it wasn't last night either. So I'm not really going to worry about it unless it starts doing it again.
