Obviously, these new subs have been in development a long time. I've spoken to Chad a few times over several months and knew they were coming. From what he tells me, the sealed 18" is an awesome sub and very tempting at a grand. Mainly, he wanted to shrink his line in terms of size and still offer stellar output and sound quality. I wouldn't be adverse to shrinking my footprint to a 20" cube. If I make the plunge, I'll let you guys know how it sounds.

The room is 2000 cube with a 5' opening into another 5500. The way the rig is oriented, the room acts more like a sealed room than not. A single Ultra13 or that new Dynasty are more than enough. I've played around with sealed in the past when music wasn't a priority. Now that it is, I no longer use the sub except during concerts or DVD A/SACD MCH (which I'm listening to less). So the sub's been relagated to 95% HT duty. I'm more than satisfied with the Ultra, but I sure could use the floor space/additional placement options with the smaller footprint.

That Dragon w/ the XLR inputs would match up REAL nice with the Emo RSP-2 Pre/ Pro.

I'm glad they're back. I was thinking they were gone for good.

BTW, has anyone had a chance to hear the Emotiva ERT 8.3 Ref. towers?

Wow! I thought I had my mind set on a couple SVS PC13's, but now it looks like the tables have turned to a couple Dragon's instead. The footprint is almost perfect for my situation, plus I dont have to look at a "water heater looking sub" in my living area either. I'm sure these subs sound fantastic, just need the reviews to start rolling in...

    Ron,

I'd love to hear a comparison with your current PB13 to one of these! I'm almost thinking the 18" will deliver more goods than the SVS, we'll see...

I haven't talked to Chad about this, but my feeling is that the shallow rolloff of the sealed 18" will provide room gain that will deliver very deep extention similar to a Submersive or the Hsu ULS 15 (even without the moving filter) with even more output. He did tell me that his prototype was able to get 124dbs max output within the meat of it's range. The amp on the prototype was rated at 1250w, 2500 peak, so the production model might not quite have that kind of top end, but hell yeah, I think it's going to be a monster performer.

Due to the price, I could afford to do a comparison between the Ultra13 and the Dragon and flip the loser. It's an interesting idea. It's something I'll consider, but due to my current usage, I'm just not sure. I really like the Rosenut finish on my SVS :D.

XLR on the left, RCA on the right. XLR's offer a better signal than RCA's.

I'm sure the sealed Epik won't dig as deep as the Ultra, it's difficult to hit the low octaves with a small enclosure. However, I'm sure if I got an Epik sealed quad set-up, I wouldn't have an issues with that either.:) I would also like to see a shoot out with HSU ULS-15 and the Epik Dragon. I'd have to bet that the Epik has more output, but question the musicality of the large 18" woofer. We'll see... Craigsub over at AVS needs to get his hands on these!

Those look very nice! The Vanquish and the Sentinel are now both in the running for the sub for my HT setup. I've been leaning mainly towards an SVS PB-12NSD, but those two both look even better. They cost a little more...but it could be well worth it.

I've got plenty of time to decide anyway I suppose.

    Ron,

Here is the response I got directly from Chad himself.

    Hello Mike,

Thanks for your email. Your question is similar to what many others have sent to us. The Dragon is first and foremost designed for sound quality, but it is very capable.

The immediate thing to make clear is that sealed subwoofers do not share the same output advantage as ported subwoofers. It is always more expensive to make a sealed subwoofer loud than a ported subwoofer. It is just physics. :)

That being said, the maximum output capability of the Dragon eclipses both the Hsu ULS-15 and the Velo DD-18 at any frequency by a noticeable amount. I have owned and measured both so I can comment directly. Considering that is smaller than the DD-18 and costs 1/5th as much, that says a lot.

The sound quality is of course a much harder thing to describe since bias always comes into play. In regards to our own subwoofers, I think the Dragon is our most musical subwoofer to date, but it will not have the sheer output capability of a larger ported version for example. Still, it has a ton of slam and power during bass heavy passages. :)

The Dragon's sound quality is a direct result of it using such a large cone surface area. We could have used a 15 inch driver to do the same thing by increasing excursion capability, but the 18 beat out the 15 relatively easily in distortion with less power and it costs less. Its cone always moves less to create the same amount of output, and the result is a very effortless sound.

Another option is to purchase a Phoenix and plug up the ports. That way you get a larger cabinet and more low end, but always have the option for a ported design should you want more output in the future.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks again for your email and your interest in Epik Subwoofers.

    All the best,

    Chad
