Default Polk Audio SDS 400 - Stereo Dimensional Surround

Polk Audio SDS 400 - Stereo Dimensional Surround

I bought these speakers 20 years ago, a few months after I bought my CRS+'s

I had them connected to a 4 Channel Amp, I basically split the out put of my Receiver and gave the SDS 400's the same info that my CRS+'s were receiving.

I haven't used these in years. But from what i recall they extended the SDA Effect to around 270 Degrees!!!

I'm willing to take them apart if anybody is interested. Maybe we can duplicate this crossover and retrofit a pair of RTA-11t's to be used with this crossover?

Imagine Adding the 11T's to your room that already has a big pair of SDA's up front?

Here's some History I just found out at Polk Fest 2008:

When i was talking with Matthew Polk about SDA's and the Monitor Series I asked him about these and he drew a blank for a few seconds and then said, "We never sold those, we made them for some of the stores to try out"

So, these things are really rare. Who Knows maybe they do work?

I'll have to hook them up again and see.

Anybody want to see the Crossover?

Ok, Cool, I just want to see how many were really made. mine say 1312. That's a lot of speakers they never made to sell. I wonder if the serial # started at 1000 and they really only made a few hundred.

No Idea, maybe somebody at Polk Audio knows ?

they look like monitor 4's from the front, how were they connected?
Most of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else -

I doubt it. There's very little as far as historical data when it comes to serial numbers for most of that decade.

I basically split the pre-out from my receiver with two Y's, one leg of the Y's went to one 2-Channel Amp and the Other leg went to another 2-Channel amp.

So they were receiving exactly the same info that the front SDA's were.

The Right SDS 400 gets both incoming Left & Right speaker cables and then the Left SDS 400 is connected to the the Right one with a 1/4" Guitar Cable.

I was just hoping that somebody knew if the common practice was to start the serial numbers at 0001 or at 1000

I saw the ones that were posted up on ebay the other day, and was wondering about them.

How do they achieve the SDA effect without having both stereo and dimensional drivers? Is each speaker receiving the signal for both channels, split into an in phase and an out of phase signal, and going to the single driver?

Or is it more like with Prologic, where both surround speakers are getting the same signal, and playing the same thing, with one speaker in phase and one speaker out of phase?

I'd never even heard of these until I saw a pair pop up on ebay the other day.

They were designed to be hooked up to the "B" speaker output of a standard stereo receiver. The speakers themselves contained the circuit to derive the surround signal. Your front speakers got hooked up to "A" speaker outputs.

Ah...I see. Thanks for clarifying that. Makes sense. Do they work well as far as extending the SDA effect? The few reviews I've found on the net seem to be kind mixed.
