Alright, I know we did this a while back and I can't for the life of me find the post. What do fellow polkies do for a living?

I'm a web developer who's dabbled in video editing and user interfaces. Ultimately, I play with databases and framework design with a concentration in CMS building. I also do some pretty decent SEO for the more public of my projects.

What about the rest of ya?

I run a tree trimming service with my brother and my dad. We've been doing it for about 4 years now. My brother and I are both certified professional tree climbers, and my brother is also a certified Arborist. I'm studying for my Arborist certification right now myself, though it will be a couple years before I get it.

We use a climbing line and harness that's pretty similar to rock climbing gear if any of you know anything about that. We also have a bucket truck for bigger jobs, but our specialty is inaccessible trees where you can't get a bucket truck in. We also do a lot of really complex rigging and speed lining for removal of limbs that are over people roofs and whatnot.

The unfortunate part about that job is that it slows down quite a bit in the winter time, so I have a lot of free time this time of year. It's starting to pick back up little by little now though. Another 3-4 weeks or so and we should be back to work full time, which I'm more than ready for.

I did that for a while. I was on the most productive tree clearing crew on the power lines in NE:) I miss doing that. I love the outdoors, but I broke my back and neck in 5 spots, and a bulging disk is against my spine now. Then I herniated 5 disks in a car crash that I was a passenger in:( No more fun stuff like that anymore. I still have my Husky 281 though. I whack a few trees here and there for heat;) I like doing that.

Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Sorry to hear about the accident bro...that's never any good.

We don't really do any line clearance ourselves. We leave that to the power companies and Asplundh. We're more into the tree care aspects for the most part. We practice proper tree pruning techniques, which a lot of other companies don't. We're also certified to treat tree's for diseases, and give them injections.

This last year we actually started using this new injection treatment that will prevent certain nut/fruit bearing trees, such as Walnuts, from developing walnuts, or whatever fruit/nut they produce. We sell a lot of that to our well-to-do clients that are tired of having to rake up a bajillion walnuts every year.

There's also been an epidemic of this disease called Oak Wilt going around this area, which affects primarily Red Oak trees. We're the only company in a 50 mile radius that's certified to administer the treatment(Alamo) for it, so we do pretty good on that too.

I like running chainsaws too, it's enjoyable when it's something you don't do a lot. When it's an everyday task though, it gets less fun and just starts becoming work...lol...I wake up in the middle of the night all the time because my hands and arms are buzzing so much from the saws vibrations...it's a PITA.

I'd rather do what I do though than spend my days working at some factory on an assembly line though.

I've also been tossing around the idea of getting into HT installation on some level sometime in the future. That's still up in the air though.

I am a Regulatory Analyst for the (broke) State of California.

I used to process millions of dollars worth of utility claims for government subsidy programs and I was the only person in the whole state doing it. Now I make sure phone companies are on the up and up regarding their promotions. I also just finished spending 13 months working on a couple of projects involving phone companies operating in isolated area.

I teach Chinese and East Asian history. I am currently in the middle of a one-year visiting position at Pepperdine University (which is in Malibu, for those of you not familiar with southern California) -- pretty sweet morning commute up the PCH from West L.A. (where I live). I'm still finishing my Ph.D. (writing my diss) in Modern Chinese History at UCLA and then I'll be looking for a permanent (tenure-track) job, which could put me anywhere in the U.S. Beggars can't be choosers...

We're on spring break this week...which explains why I'm still up at this hour of the night...I teach 8ams four days a week this semester

I do non-destructive testing on metals and welds. For people who don't know what that is, I use several different methods ie: x-ray, ultrasonics, eddy current, magnetic particle and liquid penetrant to look for defects in the material. I also do visual weld insection. I work for an engineering company that builds tooling and waste handling equipment for the nuclear power generation industry.

Really? What a coincidence! I do destructive testing on metals and welds. But I offer it as a free service for the good of society. 'Cause that's the kind of guy I am! For those who don't know, this work includes taking all manner of vehicles off of sweet jumps, using explosives to...well...blow stuff up and generally hitting stuff with hammers to see what will happen. It's very rewarding work and I make the sacrifice so you don't have to! You all can thank me later!

But seriously, my first job at Lockheed was supporting engineers in testing environments and they used similar equipment. Most of it was automated though and they were all hooked up to network resources for recording and storing testing data feeds. My job was to support the network and the network resources where the engineers recorded the data and stored test results. Some of those machines were pretty cool, like the magnetic particle and liquid penetrator and the magnafluxing machines. They used to put cups of water on top of the ultrasonics and watch it vibrate.
