Speaker HISTORY - original LARGE advent's

....How many members are nearing 60 .... and.... who's first pair of speakers were the ORIGINAL large or small Advent's....1968 - 74. It really was the "ADVENT" of sound. In that period I also had KLH ? and Dynaco 25's. Unfortunately never had great quality components to drive them.

Moved on the JBL Century 100's...for the ROCK area. and Bose 901's and so on and sooooooo....

...Well.....today I just GOT 2 pairs of the ORIGINAL advents....1 LARGE (wood veneer) and 1 small (viynl). (Hardening of the arteries setting in "foam")

WOW........fantastic midrange....lots of AIR. Maybe too much SPARKLE....but at my age....luv it. Got to get my old Dynaco st70 going. Also some great sounding bass.

Every ONE should have 2 sets of audio components. One "CLASSIC" and one contemporary. "Audio" is an ART form as well as the MUSIC. It's always a great experience to compare "past" & "present".

I gave my X a pair of Advent Heritage speakers. When I hooked them up for her I was disappointed. They sounded pretty good. Should have kept them. As for when they were made I have no idea.

I still have a pair of KLH Model Sixes. Not nearing 60 yet...but certainly over 50? More than a few of us boomers here, I suspect. Never could do the Bose thing...went directly to JBL 4413 SM which I still have and like.

My first pair of real speakers were AR-4x bookshelf speakers which are from that same era. I bought mine in 1969 or 1970 IIRC. My pair of Large Advents came a little later. I still have them both.

....took me all these Years to get back to the PAST. My main speakers - NOW - are Maggies MG-1 rebuilt and with new crossovers. Power is an ole Nad 2600 which is ornery.......think it has bad solder joint on rca jack. Ole Dual 1219 TT w/original Shure v15 III cartridge.

...also Polk SDA 2b's driven by B&K ST-140.......preamp for both is B&K pro10mc.

...secondary system is the amp section or Proton D540 w/Fosgate preamp driving the Advents----Genesis Physics II's-----IMF Compact 3's ----DCM qed's and Polk Monitor 4's, amongst others.

...the joy of AUDIO !!!

...do have a 5 channel system with assortment of Paradigm Definitive etc.But not the same as good ole 2 channel of the past.

No such animal as a "Large" Advent loudspeaker. It was either The Advent Loudspeaker, or The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker.

The "New" Advent Loudspeaker was in Stephie's room for about ten years, but I sold them about 2 years ago and replaced them with AR-302's. I also recently moved a pair of Advent "Graduate" out of here, an 8" two-way. The original KLH Model 6 I bought in 1974 are in Tiff's old bedroom. I also have AR-5, AR-9, AR-338, AR-28, and RA Labs (Roy Allison) Mini-Reference.
I also have a couple pair of Dynaco A-25 and one pair of A-50.

....Another DAY and another pair of CLASSICs. Weird how all these deals come in pairs. I just got a pair of Dalhquest M-907's . They are a 3 way speakers made in late 80's - early 90's. Swear they use the ORIGINAL Advent woofer (masonite foam surround) but 20 years later. "doG" ...what accurate deep base.....great air...great everything so far and I have'nt even dealt with placement except for putting them up on 8" stands. NO ! again.. NO ! subwoofer needed. Whats weird...can't find out much about these. Diffidently a sleeper. Next is the Dalhquest DQ-10's.......never heard them....but with these 3 ways ...can imagine.

+1 The first good system I ever heard was my uncle's Teac RTR, a Marantz receiver, and a pair of the old advents in the 70's. It was in a different world compared to anything else I'd heard at the time.

I had a pair of small Advents in the early '70's. They were used in a bedroom, not for the main system. Those were Altec's, can't remember the model number but they were called "voice of the theater". They were classics, about the size of a dishwasher and sounded great. Had McIntosh seperates driving them. Those were the days.....:)

Still have my Advent 1s that I bought new in 78 or 79, they've needed new surrounds since 1990 or so. Maybe someday I'll get em going again but for now my Polks are getting all the love and attention. I'm an old fart of 56

There was an article in The Absolute Sound that reviewed the "Stacked Advents". I posted the link here in a thread a couple of years ago. They republished it in their 30th Anniversary issue. Unfortunately TAS online archives is no longer with us and the link is no good. If you know the issue, they will sell you a PDF copy. A quick internet search yielded no results. I think I saved a copy on my computer at home. I will have to check. If so I will try to post it here. In the meantime here is the Stereophile review of The Advent Loudspeaker from 1976. The third page has a rebuttal (or clarification) of some points by Henry Kloss. It's a nice short read.

My old AR9's ended my search for 2 channel speakers. sure, there might be better out there, I just dont feel like paying the ridiculous money for it.

I'm no where near 60 but I still have my first set of KLH 17's that made the rounds here. They are about 8 years older than i am. I should have known the little bastards were promiscuous though. All tarted up in the green paint from RuSsMaN...yeah, naughty little devils because I left them in a closet by themselves and several months later, I had 9 more pairs of 17's a pair of 6's, a pair of 22's and a pair of 20's.

I can build a complete home theater with KLH 17's and and will eventually have the rest of the parts to finish my tube amps for it. Oh, I have a couple of beat KLH 17 enclosures which I think I am going to port with the 3 inch tweeter hole and load with subs so that even the subs look the same. I'll have to use solid state power for those though.

I just wish I could find fabric somewhere that matched that KLH tweed.

....anybody KNOW anything about the Dalhquest M-907's. Its a 3 way - with what looks like - an ADVENT masonite woofer. Don't think the rest of the M line used them.

Doro ! .......any reason you don't like this line? These were still from the original Dalhquest - Monitor line. I think they have great bass and a SWEET MID and upper range. Great build quality with real walnut veneer. Deeper base than the Polk Monitor 10's and better mids and highs from my memory. I have the SDA 2B's now and they are a different animal. Both sound fantastic in their own rite as do my Maggie MG 1's.

....also have a pair of IMF Compact Monitor 3's in search of a midrange ( rotted foam ).

I'm in the process of buying a pair of Advent Heritage 2-ways locally (that are identical to the pair listed here for sale on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=220758967660) for my son's rig.

Although amazingly they are not shot just yet, I'm going to have all 4 8" woofers re-foamed which will run about $140.

These are the specs and I'll post up some images when I have them here:

+1 on the KLH complete home theatre system... sounds like a good idea to me too, I have 2 pair of 17s and two pair of model 20s, a single 24... I'm thinking a pair of 24s would make a nice center channel speaker.

I am a devoted DQ-10 fan, had as many as 3 pairs at the same time, still have one primo pair.

Bought some DQ-20's recently. Set them up with the DQ-10's and A/B'd them. I think the 20's actually beat the DQ-10's.

The DQ-20's are now my current favorite. Check them out if you can

No, those are not the Smaller Advent. Those look like Advent Baby (6" two-way), or Graduate (8" two-way) with that pecan top.

I once used six KLH Model 6's along with the 6-channel ADS 10 surround processor. It was before home theater, and there was no center channel but side and rear channels. Sounded great.
