Default SKATE OR DIE! raise your hands skate rats

After putting my son's new skateboard together with him last night, it brought back sooooo many old memories.

Raise your hand if you were a skater back in the day, or maybe even a current skater.

I lived skateboards from about 11 till I was 24, all ramps pools and half pipes. That was 20 years ago.

About 5 years ago I helped a friend of mine build a 10 ft half pipe for his son. When we were done it was quite obvious that none of them had a clue how to use it, and could not get any momentum. So I donned some pads and began to demonstrate how to fakie, pump the ramp, etc. I was amazed how quickly it all came back, nothing too hard, just one wheelers and small backside aerials off the top.

I was pretty damn proud of myself, until some of their friends arrived, and I overheard one of them say "You should see this old guy skate!". I was 39 at the time.:(

The next day I could hardly move.

Yep, back in the day I was good for a concussion every month or two.

Wouldn't go near a skateboard now, but I have found myself re-buying some of the music we used to listen to then.

I skated throughout jr. high and high school. I loved it but I haven't got on a board for 15 years! It's nice that Tony Hawk and later Bam and Shawn White came along to erase the phrase "skater fag" that got thrown around at the skate scene in the Midwest.

    Now it's "cool"

I was a kindred spirit - I was always into freestyle bikes. Had a GT Pro Performer and rode it for several years then sold it like a complete moron! Could never do a whole lot of tricks but had about a half dozen I could nail halfway decent to impress my friends. ;)

Now Im too old and fat to do any tricks so I just enjoy my trusty Raleigh mountain bike.

I'm so old we used to make our own skateboards. I still have the lumps on my head and tail bone to prove it.

Used to love sk8ing back when I lived in San Diego. I then came to Virginia and found that no one here did it, so my interest eventually faded. Oh well! The cool news is that I notice a lot of kids/young people getting into it. Although I doubt I'll get back into the sport again, it's good to see that people here are finally catchin' on to how fun it can be!

I'll bet that you're old enough to have used the phrase, "Hey, anybody seen the skate key ?". :)

Yes, those are metal wheels; excellent on smooth basement floors. I was "power drifting" before there was such a thing as "power drifting". :)

Yep, we used to take them apart and screw them onto a board . . . instant skate board.

We used to make skooters out of them too.

Add some Indy trucks, Rat Bone wheels and...probably an injury or two for me...LOL

Skating was total freedom when I was in Jr High. I used to love just bumming around town and having fun. One of my most fond memories was when I was skating with my cousin down in San Diego and we are coming down a hill, whip around a corner behind the local Vons, and there was a huge delivery semi right across the road. Thinking fast, both of us just hunch down and sail right under the belly of the semi since we were going too fast to stop. As we continued down the alley behind the Vons, we turn around to see the truck driver giving us a thumbs up!

Didn't you just invert the front bolts on the front truck assembly so the nuts stood proud on the top of the deck? Man, that brings back some memories....

Hell yes! Just watched a great documentary on Christian Hosoi yesterday actually. Brought back TONS of old memories.

I had a Tony Hawk board, but was more into bikes than skating. I had a lime green (like day glow, post nuclear blast green) Dyno Pro Comp with Haro bars, bulldog brakes, the works.

My 1st bike was a Mongoose, and that's what got me hooked into the whole thing. I still have the Freestyle mag somewhere that has Matt Hoffman pulling off the 1st BMX backflip. It was a red, white and blue issue, and had a centerfold with like 30 stills of him pulling off the 1st "legit" backflip. Blew everyone's minds.

Anyhoo, thanks for the memories :)

I grew up a skateboarder as a couple others here did. Had a buddy with a 12ft pipe, I had a 15ft slider rail, could even ollie over a 55gal trash can on it's side at the age of 10. Could do pretty well. Then I grew out of it and just last year, at the tender age of 28 found wakeboarding which quickly led me to wakeskating. It's a concaved board that you ride on the water. Much better than skateboarding IMO. When you are learning a trick and fall, you hit the water. Might sting a bit if you hit hard enough but you still just splash in the water. It's the best thing I've ever done. If you guys haven't tried it, you should! Especially if you have a cable park near you. There's 4 in FL, one in TX, OK, KS, One being built in Cincinnati... look into it or at least go watch it. It's awesome!!!
