Pink Floyd DSOTM SACD on Redbook player: worthwhile upgrade?

I've got Pink Floyd on the brain lately. This happens to me around this time of year, I think, because I'm drawn back nostalgically to my favorite concert experience: when they played under a May moon at Raleigh/Durham, NC in 1994... and then one day you find 15 years have got behind you, no one told you where to run, you missed the starting gun

Anyway, I was doing some searches here at CP and saw that many spoke highly of the DSOTM SACD version. Has anybody spun it on a non-SACD player...I have the regular 1990 CD release and am wondering if it would be a worthwhile upgrade (in terms of 2 channel sound quality?). Anybody compare the 1990 CD with the SACD (2003)?

Sorry, Norm, I don't have any info for you. But I did want to mention that this is up there on my favorite Classic Rock albums of all time list. Mostly because I grew up listening to it, and remember falling asleep to it many times in the family minivan, as it warbled slightly on cassette in the factory deck :). My parents grew up with classic rock, and they're the ones I have to thank for even knowing what the hell DSOTM is. Too many of my 23-year-old peers have no idea what they're missing....

I'd say it's very worth it. I've got both the 1990 version of DSOTM as well as the SACD version. I bought the SACD version a couple years before I ever even got an SACD player, so I've listened to the redbook layer a lot. I'd say it's definitely much better than the 1990 version. The re-mastering on the SACD version is phenomenal, even on the redbook layer.

The album art of the SACD version trumps the 1990 version too...by a long shot. The booklets pretty cool. It shows you all of the different album art from the various different versions of DSOTM over the years.

I'll also add that this is hands down my favorite album of all time. I spent a lot of time comparing the two when I first got the SACD version. The SACD version also has an additional track, "Speak To Me" at the beginning of the cd, which I feel makes it all flow a lot better. It makes a great intro to the album.

I have 4 different versions of DSOTM. Standard redbook from a box set, 24k gold remaster, SACD and vinyl. IMO the Super Audio disc is superior, but I like spinning it on vinyl from time to time. 16.00 on amazon is well worth the investment for the SACD.

A little bit of both. Actually, I was living abroad from 2003 to 2006 and due in part to that, was not even aware of this SACD release until I did some general searches for Pink Floyd here over the weekend and this kept popping up....that's what prompted the original post.

Second, since I don't have (and don't plan to get) a SACD player any time soon, I hadn't really kept up with the SACD format. Sounds like a worthwhile investment, though, even for regular playback.

Norm....just make sure you get a Japan pressing of the SACD. The US version of the DSOTM SACD was originally pressed in the US, but that version suffered from cracks that developed in the center ring. Subsequent US version of the DSOTM SACD was pressed in Japan by Sony and those are OK. If you can look on the back cover, a Japan pressing can be identified by the words "Manufactured in Japan...." on the lower left side.

Subsequent US version of the DSOTM SACD was pressed in Japan by Sony and those are OK. Interesting, I didn't even know there were different versions of it. I just checked, and I've got a Japanese pressing. Good to know.:)

Or the rest of the Pink Floyd albums for that matter. If they released their whole catalog on SACD I would be buying it all in one shot...no questions asked. We need a complete Pink Floyd SACD box set.

I remember hearing rumors of a WYWH SACD a while back...has it been confirmed, or is it still a rumor?

Is the 1990 version the one on the gold CD? I have that one. That was back in the day when gold CDs sounded better than silver CDs. :)

On the other hand, I was floored by how great the SACD sounded. If there ever was an album made for surround sound it is Dark Side Of The Moon.

Back when I used to have a turntable I must have gone through 3-4 albums of DSOTM.

The last I heard of the SACD to WYWH was from David Gilmour and he said it was still being worked on. That was several months ago. The artwork for the SACD, however, has been published though.

Is the gold version you have the Mobile Fidelity? I'm digging the MoFi version more then the SACD currently. Vinyl's not bad, but nothing to write home about IMO. Unless you've got that itch that only vinyl can scratch. :)

It is a MFSL gold disc. And you are correct about that itch. ;)

Live at Pompeii is an excellent DVD. I actually just watched it again a week or so ago.

This just arrived today. Its probably been a good 17 years since I last saw it. While viewing the opening track of the original film, Echoes, I couldn't help but be struck by the fact that the Beastie Boys had based their video for Gratitude (1993?) from "Check Your Head" on Live at Pompeii.

Kind of cool.

No info on the SACD but if you guys liek Floyd there is a band that tours called thde Australian Pink Floyd.

If you close your eyes you swear Roger and David are on stage. They have a website that has tours dates. I'm a huge Floyd fan. Well worth going to see them.

I got the 30th anniversary edition LP, and just got the same on hybrid SACD (2003) :). Will be comparing redbook CD version to LP in a couple of days (SACD player is currently inaccessible).

According to this blog entry, the release of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" on SACD is coming soon. A multi-channel surround demo of "WYWH" was demonstrated at the 2009 Rocky Mountain Audiofest a couple of months ago.
