Default National record store day 4-18-2009. What store(s) in your town are participating?

Just thought I would mention that 4-18-2009 is national record store day. The best place in Richmond to get cds, vinyl, hard to find items, and the like is Plan 9 records. They are having live bands, food, giveaways, and great discounts. I thought this would be a good way to inform others as to what places in your town are participating. That way if there is nothing local to you, you may be close enough to another town to make a trip to share in the fun.

I first heard of it this morning when I read an email from one of my buddies. I began checking around and sure enough it is. Does not seem to be HUGE yet, so I thought this would be a good way to let others know about it. I'm looking forward to supporting my local record store......by helping eat all the free food. Seriously though, think I will pick up a few things I have been wanting and use this event as an excuse to go downtown.

Just for the heck of it, here is a band most of you have not heard of but thought you may like them. I was going to post this in the "Never-Kissed Woman Wows Cowell" thread but did not want to go off topic. What got me thinking about this was the link to Kurt Nilsen (dude has a great voice btw). The band is One Less Reason. Just click on the link and you can take a listen and judge for yourself if you like them; link takes about 10 seconds to buffer depending on how fast your internet connection is.

Got lots of "music" stores that sell CDs, I can't remember the last time I saw vinyl in a store. (except, among other stuff in antique malls etc.) If I revive one of my TTs before next years event, I just might have to head to Balt. or DC , where I imagine there's a record store or two.:)

If you want to come to Richmond I can meet you anywhere you like and we can check it out. Plus, as a bonus there is a cool little audio shop that has used gear about 5 minues away. Not in the best part of town but they have some really cool vintage stuff and some not so cool stuff as well. Either way, thought I would extend the invite.:D

Btw, they have more than vinyl at Plan 9. New,used, hard to find (FIM,MFSL) cds as well. You have to look to find them but that's part of the fun I think. They also have dvds, posters, and a listening station with 2 turntables to demo stuff. Pretty cool store.

Does this mean I should go to the only record store in town, also known as FYE? No thanks.

I personally do not go there because it's just not my taste. Here is where I am going in a few minutes to pick up a few albums. I don't even have a turntable yet (still getting my learn on so I make an informed purchase) but I might as well get some inventory so I will have something to listen to once I do. Now this is the kinda record store I like.

Well, I went to a couple of record stores and this is what I picked up on the cheap (I did pay $20.00 for the box set though). All are in excellent or mint condition. I felt like a kid in a candy store.....was REALLY hard to not buy more but I don't even have a frickin' tt yet, lol.

    R.E.M.-Document (MCA)

Empire Strikes Back Soundtrack Soundtrack (no idea why I bought it other than I like Star Wars and it reminds me of very happy times)

Pink Floyd-Atom Heart Mother (Harvest Records)

Pink Floyd-Pulse, 4 record box set (I pick this up on Monday, coming in from out of town)

I'm from Williamsburg just down 64 (E), but went to school in Charlottesville and the Plan 9 there was my favorite place to browse (that was back in the late 90s). There is now a Plan 9 in Williamsburg (they replaced the only two "record" stores in town, one of which was named Echoes after the Pink Floyd track), but I've never been to the Plan 9 in Richmond.

Anyway, the biggest store here in L.A. is Amoeba records...I'm wondering if they are participating (???) The inventory of Amoeba (both the one here in L.A. as well as the one in Berkeley) dwarfs the Plan 9 in Charlottesville.

Cool, a local that knows of Plan 9. The store on Cary St. in downtown Richmond, is very cool since it's right in the VCU area. There are tons of college kids buying, trading and selling, so the inventory is pretty good. Never been to the one in CV but since I take trips to the mountains to train I just may stop there sometime. Recordfinders (the link a few posts back) is owned by Plan 9 now. When I was in there they let me see the back and it's HUGE!!!!! The guys there were telling me they have an inventory of over 200,000 records. They are getting ready to have a silent auction in May and I picked up a paper of all the listings and they have quite alot of decent stuff. I am going to bid on the "audiophile" stuff, well some of it anyway.

So, if you are from WB and went to school in CV, did you have culture shock when moving to L.A.? I know I did when I was in the military and got stationed in Alameda (right next to Oakland). I was only 17 so most anything "shocked" me really, lol. I hope the event is good but then again, any event in Carytown is usually killer. Ahhhh, just remembered there is a "higher" end audio store 1 block away from Plan 9 called Blue Oasis Audio I will have to check out as well.

We have a guy up here, he caters to the college crowd, has been around for decades, you can tell by the naked KLHs that are hanging on either side of the store...does used Vinyl, CDs and used CDs.....how this guy stays in business is beyond me....but there are some 'cool' things in there and we do our best to keep him going! Otherwise it's just chain stores....

I may drop in on the 18th and buy something if that, indeed, proves to be a legit DAY.

Wasn't this event in May last year?

I stopped by the local used book store 'Bookmans' that has some vinyl and alot of CD's that are used for sale, just to see what's up. Well they had about 2,000 CD's getting checked and stickered for the Big Sale coming up, lot's of folks selling their's because of the economy:(, hopefully some treasures to be had! :D
    Huh? Wot?? Dig it

Where can I get me some??
