You get what you pay for. In their case, cheap junk.

A friend of mine recently wanted some stands for a pair of speakers he hadn't used in awhile and asked me to see what was available for the requirements needed. I found choices from VTI, Sanus and Skylan. He decided to go with the cheapest price and had me order a set from VTI. My first impression was how cheap the the packaging was. My next impression was how poorly made they are. It seems the paint chips easily as there were more than a few on the base plates. The welded plates inside the top of the columns were not evenly done and once assembled the top plates didn't sit square with the base. One of six screws used to attach the top plates was missing from the sealed bag and one of the screw heads was slightly smaller and a slighty different color than the others. On the top of the base plates is the company logo, which were attached in different locations on the two stands. All in all, nothing but junk, IMO. However, my friend isn't picky and didn't really care about all the build issues. He also didn't care that metal is the worst choice of material for speaker stands.

On the other hand, I'm very picky and fully understand what makes a good speaker stand, so I bought mine from Skylan. They arrived well packaged and the assembly was a breeze as the design is simple, but ingenious. The fit and finish is flawless. As the stands have to be mass loaded, they even supplied a cup and paper funnel...a nice touch.

Interesting ... saw a lot of good comments on VTI products out there.

The pics on the skylan website look metal. Is that MDF?

The tops and bottoms are MDF, the columns are a thick plastic....zero ringing. Everything is sprayed with a slighty textured catalyzed satin black lacquer. Again, you have to mass load the stands. I used 25 lbs. of leadshot per stand and might add some sand later. The other great thing about Skylan stands, you can order the plate size and column height in just about any size you want.

Yeah, the first thing I noticed was that those stands in the OP were metal... and I ended up facepalming myself. I need to stop that.

Those Skylan stands look like they would be really good. I'd never heard of them. I like my Sanus SF30's, especially since they were only $120 from Parts Express, but if I'd seen the Skylans first, I may have tried a pair.
