Going to see The Grateful Dead tonight!!!

So, The Dead are on tour right now, and a while back I'd basically decided not to go, because they're playing in a bunch of basketball stadiums. They're also playing at the Rothbury Festival in Michigan this year, so I figured I'd skip the show at the Rosemont, and just see them at Rothbury.

Yeah...screw that. I changed my mind...lol...I'm going to see The Grateful Dead tonight!!!:D:D I'm completely stoked!! They're basically my favorite band,(though my favorite tends to change from day to day), and I've never seen them before...so I'm not gonna miss this show.

I guess there are people selling cheap tickets in the parking lot for 20-30 bucks, so for that cheap I cant argue.

It should be an awesome time. I'm leaving in a couple hours with my brother and a couple friends, and the show starts at 7:30. So, 8 hours from now I'll be seeing my favorite band live for the first time!!! I can't wait.:D

Unfortunately I'm to young to have ever seen them with Jerry, a fact that disappoints me to very big extents. The music he wrote has impacted my life in a very big way.

One of my older brothers, who I'm going with tonight, was on Dead tour for the last few years before Jerry passed. IIRC he went to 43 shows.

I was hoping for slightly better from the Worcester. Good not great. A lot of straight ahead playing, Type 1 rock - jamming - tension and release. Not to much in the way of "magic" or exploration. I never reached a, "how the F" or a woohoo/scream point. It was earlier in the tour so you can probably expect better.

Let me guess....while in line someone gave him a spiked drink, took his money for some bunk tickets and enjoyed the concert. He's currently passed out in the middle of someone's backyard stark nekkid with only a pom-pom and a lollipop to keep him company. When he wakes up, he'll have wonderful memories of a concert he never attended.

I had a friend who took one too many hits if acid at a GD show at RFK. Ended up outside the show sometime in the second set, and took a swim in that river next to RFK.

Had a mysterious rash appear all over his body from that water.

1) That river... I think it is the Anacostia, although maybe it's the Potomac itself. Probably the former; given that RFK was (is) way on the east side of town.

2) It would be interesting indeed to see/hear The Golden Road live!

A better experience than this version of the Dead is to go see Dark Star Orchestra. Even better than the real thing sometimes. Impeccable. This is not just a coverband. Believe me. I saw them do a late 70s show at Calvin theater in North Hampton, MA.

The likeness in looks, sound, mannerism boders on bizarre. Wait till you hear the singers voice crack and weaken like Jerry's did in the 80s/90s. Frightening.

I think there are maybe 10 other bands who could do what the Dead are doing now.
I don't think there is a band out there who can do what Phish does even if you don't care for them.

Actually, I'm right there with you in regards to the Jerry-less Dead. Didn't get to catch any of the Grateful Dead shows as I was just starting to get over my aversion to patchouli oil and rich kids in tie dyes when Jerry passed. The Dead were stellar when I caught them at Apline Valley at (what I think was) the first show after Jerry died. Hearing some shows after that, my enjoyment may have had more to do with that Easter candy I bought in the parking lot. Haynes is a great guitar player, does well with Jerry's parts, but once he opens his mouth it ruins the it for me. Do like him with 'Mule, though.

Phish can do more then suck it. I'd punch that pill popping lispy Trey Anastasio in the throat if I saw him in the cool shade of a banana tree......

DSO is just straight up eerie in how well they recreate the shows. From soundcheck to encore, just so close it's weird. They're coming to western Maryland on Memorial Day weekend for a festival called Delfest put on by the Del McCoury Band. Sunday night they close the show with an acoustic and electric set; I wouldn't be surprised if they do some NRPS stuff with Del's band or Leftover Salmon sitting in as the Rider's during the acoustic set. Trying to convince my wife that giving birth in a field surrounded by hillbillys is another form of natural child birth.

Phish, eech. Got burned at Coventry, can't get over it...

Coventry was most certainly painful and sad. I don' think that was the end though. I'm looking forward to the summer. Coming out and throwing down in the first set like they did at Hampton I think is a good sign of renewed commitment.

While there was a newness for 92-95 era and Funk for 97-98 some of those 03-04 shows were minty. The playing was less "machine gun trey" and more of a powerful cohesive band with the other guys stepping up more than years past.

Page is more comfortable than ever after listening to Hampton.

That's almost exactly what I'd say. The show was awesome. I ended up scoring a pretty good seat too, and only paid 20 bucks for a 95 dollar ticket. It was on the upper balcony, basically dead center about 3 rows back. I'm not sure if that's the seat where I was supposed to be or not, but that was where the cutest girls were, so it's where I ended up...lol

I had a great time though, I missed most of Dancing unfortunately, but got in right as Tennessee was starting up. The Golden Road they played was excellent, TLEO was awesome, they played a really jammy Touch with some awesome bass lines, Phil was really tearing it up.

The second set was definitely better than the first. They opened it with an AWESOME Truckin'. Mickey and Billy played some awesome drums that lasted for about 12 minutes and had me in a completely different world...

Then they busted out Come Together...which was kinda weird. Phils bass lines in it were good, but the rest of it seemed kinda off.

HIAB was awesome...That's an excellent song, I'm glad I got to hear it live. They played an awesome Rider. I about lost my mind when they came back out and played Brokedown Palace...that's one of my favorite Dead songs, and it was one of the songs I'd been hoping to hear all night long. Warren messed up a few of the lyrics in Palace, which kinda threw it off.

Warren was shredding it up all night...he's an excellent guitar player. Bobby was on fire!! It was awesome seeing Billy and Mickey drumming together...

They had a section of the parking lot taped off for RV parking and they were letting people camp out there overnight. People were there partying til about 6 in the morning, which is when we left. A bunch of people were there jamming, a band had a PA setup in the lot...I brought my acoustic with me and spent the rest of the night jamming out in the lot. I had an excellent night.

My brother and I were thinking about jumping in the camper and heading out to Colorado for the shows tomorrow night...but these damn priorities get in the way...

Oh well, I'm looking forward to seeing them again in a couple months at Rothbury.

I can completely understand that, and a lot of Dead heads feel the same way. Unfortunately, I'm to young to have gone to any of the Jerry shows, so I'll take what I can get, it was still an awesome time.

And yes, Phish can suck it IMO.

I miss the Grateful Dead. Some of the best times of my life were before, during and after the shows. My favorate show was at the Hampton Coliseum in the 80's. They were not allowed to play there at The Dead so they toured as the Warlocks (hence the user name). Don't remember much of the first set, but the second set was great.

I thought about seeing the Non-Garcia Dead, but I am afraid it will bum me out too much.

I have moved on as well. Been listening to a lot of O.A.R. lately, but I will always love the Dead as well as the Beatles, Stones, Who, Floyd and many other great bands from my youth.

While those times of youth have passed the love has not faded away.

The songs remain relevant at every turn of life. I hardly listen to the Dead now but when I do it's a joy. It can be more therapeutic and better than church.
