This was done after he lost his wife June Carter Cash. Read the story. Very sad. He died shortly there after.
    RIP Johnny Cash:(

He certainly looked and sounded (just his tone, still a damn awesome singer) like he was ready to let go.

    Just happened to early.

Well I believe he is in a much better place. I know we don't ever know the full story, but from what I have seen heard he is walking streets of Gold. I can't wait to see him, Don Williams, and Elvis singing praises to the All Mighty.

Agreed; great song, and great cover. However, I never knew it was a cover. I thought it was original to him.

Same here. Thought the song was his. Extremely heart-felt song, full of angst and pain. You could tell he was holding back tears while singing it. One of those songs that I just don't grow tired of listening to.

Maybe it was because my parents played Johnny Cash music all the time, and you know how not cool it is to like the same music as your parents, but I never had a real good appreciation for JC until his final run of albums that includes American IV. JC really showed how versatile of a performer he is, and how passionately he could sing a song on those last albums. Amazing stuff! Especially considering everyone thought that his career was over.

My dad was amazed when I knew the words JR's 'Hurt.' I was like, wow, I didn't know this was originally a JR song. My dad was like yea, he wrote it right before he died...and i was like...wait a second, this song has been out since mid 90s. So I looked it up online and sure enough, originally a Trent Reznor song. Cant wait to see him again as I have burned a copy of the original:p I wont play 'Closer' for him though...haha.

Listen to Sevendust's version of Hurt. It's quite possibly my favorite version. I love to turn it up loud and jam out hard.

The only thing I didn't like about him covering "Hurt", is it brought the song into the forefront. It was a rather unknown song except for NIN fans, but I started hearing people playing it at talent shows, etc. It's a great song, but I think most people made it really popular without actually considering the lyrics of the song or how dark it actually is.

It is VERY VERY DARK....but that's a place we all need to go from time to time. That's what makes this Cash version so soul-ripping. It feels like one is being torn apart. Not for the faint of heart or the superficial!

A artist is one who has his/her own vision on the outer scope of life, and reality, looking beyond the spectrum of things in life. not being a follower (poser if you wish) standing on what they believe.

Looking beyond religion, war, communism, government policies etc. an artist won't see things in just black or white they see the greater things in the Grey area third eye if you will. creating music, paintings, sculpture, acting, dancing, writing, film making, photography etc. is an outlet to share their creativity.

Sure we all have influences in life, but to me a true artist will find their inner channel, have their own creative way and imagination they see things in a different perspective and bring it to life.

I can go on and on here on how i define an artist.as there are many types of art, from music to the medical Field and mathematics. but a true artist will see beyond and bring new things to the table. there is an artist in all of us, but on how or why you want me to define an artist. well i believe a person can learn how to play a guitar like Eddie Van Halen sure thats talent but an artist? i would have to be on the fence on that one. where is your voice and sound?

The one problem i have with the industries today is they don't care about the art anymore, and a lot of artist will just follow suit for the money. they just become part of the production line. they have sold their souls for one thing money.

Sure some artist's make it doing it their way and we are blessed enough to experiance it. but a lot of great artist's are left behind because they don't look a certain way sound like the last piece of candy ass crap they shove down our throat.

So what type of art would you like me to Define or was this just a test?

I agree. The cover by JC is excellent, but it is Trent's persona that created the embodiment of the song. HRT did get popular on the radio eventually. People I knew that would never listen to NIN liked the song on the radio and did not realize who they were listening to.

I encourage those who like this song and are not familiar to NIN, to check out the entire album The Downward Spiral. Hurt is just the finale to an epic album, a journey of the individual who plays his own protagonist and antagonist.

Trent Rezner plays all the instruments on this album and wrote all the songs. It was produced in the house where the Manson murders took place, unbeknownst to Trent before he leased it. When they demolished the house, he kept the front door.

Whether one enjoys NINís music or not, one has to respect the talent of Rezner.
