    Default Acoustic Panel Question

    Hello All,

From inside edge to inside edge of my 1.2TL's I have 62"

Will I benefit by covering up the entire wall in-between the 1.2's with acoustic panels or will it suffice to just put a few panels behind each speaker leaving a 36" section of exposed wall right smack in the middle of my front wall ?

Or should I just cover the whole front wall ?

    Thanks,

    Sal

Too many panels will kill the room. What are the dimensions of the room? You may not need as many this time around.

    Hey Face,

I was gonna call you but I posted instead, you heard my old room, it sounded pretty damn good. I have exactly the same panels right now. (4) 24x48x4's & (2) 48x48x4

With all them in the room it's still very bright.

I just bought 6 more panels today and I will have them by next friday. If I go over board I will just remove some panels.

my main issue is that there is a window behind the left 1.2, so I can't evenly space out 3 panels. I can have them offset a bit, but I don't want that to cause distractions while listening to the music.

I like every thing symetricial. So i was going to just mount two or 4 panels directly behind each 1.2

Will I benefit by filling up the space in-between the two speakers or is it ok to leave some empty wall in-between the two 1.2's ?

    Thanks!

I would add two at a time until it's no longer an echo chamber. :)

Do you have an area rug?

You have the first reflection covered, right?

The first reflection point will have a couch at some point and (4) 24 by 48 by 4's

I do not have an Area rug yet, I might buy one this weekend. I was hoping I could get by without one.

I was also planning on putting two 24x48x4's on the ceilings above the 1.2's with the long edge pointing in my direction so that I can get some of the ceiling reflections as well.

If you're going to put anything on the ceiling, I believe it would work best at the first reflection.

Can I use acoustic ceiling tiles attached to my drywall ceiling on the primary ceiling reflection point vs fiberglass panels? Can I use a thinner 6 lb fiberglass panel instead of thicker 3 lb panels and get the same sound deadening effect?

If your room is too bright, I would be locating the panels in the room before they are placed behind the speakers. Your speakers are not omnidirectional at higher frequencies. In priority, I would address first reflection points on side wall, back wall, rear of side walls, behind but above the speakers on front wall, between the speakers on front wall, beside speakers on side walls. It also looks like you have a hard wood floor. I would place an area rug between you and the speakers regardless. If you do decide on ceiling panels, place then at the first reflection point first as mentioned before other locations.

    Thanks jm1

Please check out the plan I just drew below, you can see that I have hung (2) 48"x48"x4's on either side of the 1.2's and I was just about to install the (4) 24"x48"x4"ers on the back wall, two will be mounted to the back of the two doors on that wall.

Then I have (6) 24"x48"x4"ers left, What would you do with the last 6, what would be a best location for them?

    Thanks,

    Sal

This is what I found on ATSAcoustics's website about panel placement:

Q: Where should I place the panels in the room?

A: In general, where you place the panels in the room is not critical. A visually pleasant appearance is often the guiding factor in placement. The most important thing is simply to get the total square footage of panels into the room somewhere. No matter where you place them, the panels will soak up the extra sound that is bouncing off every surface in the room.

That said, we do have a couple of non-critical guidelines for acoustic panel placement. First, you get more absorption per square foot of panel when the panel is placed in or near a corner. Said another way, you'll need slightly fewer panels in your room if you place some of them in or near corners.

Second, if there is a primary source of sound in the room, such as speakers at one place in the room, it's a good idea to place panels at first reflection points. These are places where the sound can come from the source, bounce once, and reach the listener. For example, on the side walls of a listening room midway between the listener and the speakers. This is because sound that reaches the listener after traveling an indirect path arrives just a little later than sound that came directly. This means your brain has to sort out multiple copies of the same sound, making things sound less clear and making speech more difficult to understand. Adding panels at the first reflection points reduces the late-arriving sound so your brain can focus on one clear copy of the sound.

So, I'm going to make sure I fill the corners of the room and get the first reflection point. Right now I basically have (8) 24x48x4's, I just ordered (6) more. I'll introduce 2 at a time until I like the sounds.

Good idea Lasareath. I think I'm going to focus on panel treatments once I get back home off business. The prices where you are buying from are very cheap. I have foam bass traps now up front but will try the panels as they look better and may even out perform the foam. Please share your thoughts once you've added a few, GL with the project bro.

I think I'm going to start with 4 once I get back home. I need to take some measurements and see what will work. Let me know how you like them once you get yours installed.

The shipping is very expensive because of the size of the units. I bought 6 and paid nothing for shipping.
