My 16 yr old daughter has her Ipod docking station blasting upstairs. Not only is her tastes in music driving me crazy, but the sounds out of that docking station are HORRIBLE.

"No, that's silly talk. Dude, you can't possibly be this audio dumb so quit the act." - Doro
Ugggh... Do your fatherly duty and get her a REAL system! You're the one who's to blame here, not her!
Ludicrous gibs!
I bet if you get her a real system, it will be blown within the day.
Teach her not to blast, then teach her the ways of audio.

One problem is that if you want any kind of decent volume out of those iPod docks, you clip the life out of the unit. It's strange because I really don't think they were made to play music...
In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence.

It is like anything else music related. You get what you pay for. Are you saying that a cheapo boom box is the same as a high-end home system?
Here is one way to upgrade the music from the iPod. Of course, there is the caveat that the music on the iPod is not compressed.

However, even this will not give the best performance for the iPod, since it relies on the iPods internal DAC. To get the best performance you need a Wadia iTransport dock, which extracts the digital data from the iPod, and then feeds it into an external DAC. Assuming the DAC is then fed into a decent high-end system, you will get a level of music quality equal to a higher end CD player.
Man,I just don't get it.Cough up coin for a transport and dac,add a good rig,and you have higher end cd quality?? Um...why not just get the higher end cdp ?
Because the CD player only holds one CD, versus 1000s. The CD player cannot support playlists of favorite CDs, and/or songs. The CD player cannot randomly shuffle through thousands of songs. The CD player cannot play non-stop for weeks. The CD player's DAC cannot be upgraded as better DACs become available. But, generally speaking, the CD player does look nicer.
I just placed an order this morning for a Bryston DAC to upgrade my Benchmark DAC1 Pre.

This is an interesting quote from a review for the Bryston.
"The arrival of Music Servers and their use at home rings the death knell of the CD medium. I know, you’ll tell me that that’s what they said about vinyl more than 25 years ago! The digital format is here to stay, but the CD, this little polycarbonate and aluminum disk, will disappear. Music will come to us in other ways and my guess is that the Internet will be the favourite delivery mechanism. I’m pretty sure that DACs will be called on to become the heart of tomorrow’s hi-fi audio systems. Getting the most out of the
digital files that we will eventually access will depend on the quality of this “gateway.”"

My daughter has grown up hearing (not listening to) higher end audio, and it doesn't interest her. She would be very happy if I took the Outlaw sub off our HT, and won't watch movies on the HT because of it's audio, yet she's really happy watching movies upstairs on either a 32" tv or a 42" plasma with no HT on it at all.
