Default Question about sr6500 and 5250 set up as coax.

I'm looking at the sr6500 or sr5250 for my ford explorer front doors. I prefer to install them as a coax. I have reviewed the listed mounting depths of each speaker and the mounting depth is not an issue. But I need to know how far the tweeter protudes from the mid-woofer mounting flange when installed as a coax.

I would plan to mount these in the stock speaker locations and want to verify if the tweeters will clear my door panel without modifications or cutting the door grill out. I have not been able to find this measurement in any online manuals. I can't really cut out holes in the door panel and use the included grills as the grills would have to be cut to fit.

I called Polk tech support and the rep just said "about an inch" for each of them and it sounded like an estimate. I assumed the 5250 would be less than the 6500. There was a good discussion of this issue on this forum a while ago(see link below), but no measurements were listed. Any help would be appreciated.

Lastly, if only the 5250 is an option, would I just be better off going with the 6 1/2" mm coax for better mid-bass?

I dont know how far the tweeter sticks out but I know the grill is 1 1/8" in height and the tweeter mounted coaxially fits inside it so Id say thats a pretty safe bet.

As for midbass, if you can fit it, the 6500 is the better speaker. The 5250 has a little more detailed midrange but the midbass energy from the 6500 more than makes up for it and makes the overall sound quality a little better. The 6500 mid is one of the finest speakers on the market regardless of price point.

Yeah, I don't think the sr6500 will fit. I have some alpine coaxs in their right now that have a top mounting depth of 2 5/16" and I used two 1/8" spacers to give them enough clearance behind the speaker to fit. With that setup I have about 1/2" or 3/4" between the tweeter and the door grill.

What do you think about going with the sr5250 mounted as components in the 5x7 plate that they come with, vs. going with the mm651 coax's?

SR's all the way. No doubt. They are a far superior speaker to the MM's.

I have the 6500's up front as seperates and another pair as coaxials in the rear of my 350z, if I can squeeze them in you sure should be able to as well. I was really impressed that the speaker 95% as good as a comp when mounted as a coaxial. Great speakers, I have them paired to a DLS amp and could not be happier.
