Default Car destroyed for cash for clunkers

    http://www.foxnews.com/video2/video0...w.foxnews.com/

Question I have other then nice car what a shame, why did it die like that? I would think any engine should be abused like that in that short time period with no problems. Unless something was done to it too help it along.

Destroyed for cash for clunkers? I doubt it, that car was worth more than the cash for clunkers rebate.

Dealers must replace the oil in the “clunker” with two quarts of sodium silicate solution and run the engine for up to seven minutes, permanently disabling it, according to rules released today by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Washington.

Given that the Government is paying up to $4500 to essentially buy the car from you and keep it off the road, makes sense to me. Why would they want a dealer to sell that engine to a junk yard and have it re-appear in another vehicle when they've just paid good money to "get it off the road"?

I don't personally think the program is particularly useful, but that's another story altogether...

That was a nice Volvo, they had a hard time killing it. Is there no better use?
Why not give/sell it, as a tax liability, to someone that can show the need. . .maybe someone who is willing to relocate to find work, but doesn't have the means. Win/Win. Myopic lunacy.

I'd be more concerned about the clause in the contract that says the government owns your computer. It's on one of the pages of the 150 page deal.

i don't think that volvo falls into the clunker category it seems to be a newer car and if thats the case i'm taking in my audi a6 and getting a new one :) i was on the understanding that the car has to get less than 19 mpg average to even qualify. but i haven't looked to far into it as i figure my car won't qualify and i like my jeep its paid for :)

With the oil cap which was remove, these a bottle of something next to the car... I think they added something to kill that engine. Sad I would buy that car for $4500 no problem.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. The people who are in the market for the very vehicles they're killing off are the same people this government claims to care so much about. The people who buy these cars are in the younger and poorer demographics. The people who can't afford a new car or a higher end used car.

I listened to a radio program this afternoon and auto techs were calling in saying what a waste it was they were just destroying these otherwise great vehicles.

Will someone explain to me the economics of taking a vehicle that has several years of usefull life and destroy it only to replace it with a vehicle costing many thousands of dollars more just to save a few hundred dollars a year in fuel costs. Not only is the actual cost of ownership substantially higher...the cost to produce another vehicle is much more taxing on the environment than the extra gallons of fuel the existing vehicle would use.

My old 98 Riviera with 131,000 miles didn't qualify, but my 98 Corvette with 60k miles did... In the end, I traded in the Riv(which was falling apart) for $1500. I can see some positives from this bill, but more thought should have went into it.
I'm waiting for the healthcare bill, that should be even more interesting.

Too bad the majority of the people in this country don't have a brain, otherwise this would have NEVER gone through without a major fight.

Killing that Volvo was ridiculous. That was a VERY nice car.

People have those "clunkers" because it's what they can afford. Pretty nice of the government to trick people into thinking they can afford a shiny new car just to put some MORE DEBT in the mix.

What a kick in the nuts it would be if EVERYONE bought a Hyundai with that money.

You're probably right, but then again, everyone jumped my balls when i pointed out that a lot of Toyotas and Hondas are made here, helping jobs here, because they only cared that the companies were BASED in Japan, so screw all the good that they actually do for the people of this country. BUY AMERICAN: YOU'RE EITHER WITH US, OR AGAINST US.

My main reason for laughing at the rhetorical scenario of everyone buying Hyundais would be (wait, let me put my tin foil hat on) that i think the Cash For Clunkers bill has more to do with trying to get people to buy cars from Government Motors. (Cars that should probably just be given to them at a HUGE discount anyways, since, you know, we all own them.) Notice the fairly recent influx of commercials saying how GM cars have GREAT gas mileage? I'm convinced that this isn't a coincidence. This all has to do with the pretense of "GREEN IS WHAT WE WANT" that the government is trying to force down our throats. They're just trying to tell you that they're trying to better the world by giving you a once in a lifetime chance to own a shiny new modern car that you can't really afford and do your part to save the planet. Oh, by the way, we're going to crush your car AND [not-so-subliminal messaging] by the way! We make very fuel efficient vehicles priced perfectly for the everyday American citizen![/not-so-subliminal messaging].

I dunno... I really don't care about the bill on a personal level. None of my cars (all could probably be called clunkers by the less-informed) even qualify, despite a combined purchase price of $2200 for all three. The MPG is way to high on all of them, even the MX6 which belches raw unburnt fuel, fireballs, and all kinds of gases that the 20 year old emission system probably isn't filtering anymore.

My only initial outrage was that they were crushing the cars, effectively taking them out of the reach of us junkyard/used parts hunters. Then i 1) found out that only the drivetrains are being destroyed in most cases, then the rest of the car goes to salvage, and 2) I doubt any of the cars that qualify will be anything that i'll be looking for later.

Probably not a ton of Datsuns or classic Toyotas worth a damn are getting "clunked."

I may come off as way off base on a lot of this, but the idea of the whole bill just pisses me off, but i don't feel left out or anything.
