So I did some hiking. Went to Cumberland Gap National Park first. It is at the corner of the states of TN, VA and KY. Much less traveled that the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Went by myself. Not too long or too much elevation change. I started out at the bottom and hiked up to the Pinnacle at about 2,600 feet from a little under 1,000 feet. Only problem was it was all in the first mile or so. Pretty steep. But the veiws and the solitude was worth it. I saw no one else for the 8 miles I hiked.
This is probably on the TN/VA line...
Looking East into VA...
Looking SW into TN....
Today I was a little more ambitious. My daughter and I went up on the Appalachian Trail running along the spur of the mountain on the TN/NC border at around 6,000 feet. We started out at around 4,000 feet and the round trip was about 9 miles.
We ended up at the Jump Off which is just off the AT. According to the GPS we were around 6,200 feet. It is so named because the trail literally ends at a 1,000+ foot sheer cliff drop off. My daughter made me nervious all hell as she peered over the ledge.
This is looking southeast into NC...
My daughter looking NE into TN....
Based on some of the stuff going on here lately...I was much better off where I was rather than wasting time on here. Besides it was at least 20-25 degrees cooler up on the mountain than it was down here in the valley.
