    Default DSL Internet speed

This is for DSL users. Does anybody have any experience comparing the 512Kbps vs 1.5Mbps service? Is the speed noticeable for general internet browsing?

With so much active content on most web pages nowadays, you will notice a difference...go with the 1.5.

I have friends / customers with 1.5M and my sister + a friend currently have basic 768K (512 isn't offered here). I would have to say the biggest difference I notice is with large file downloads and on streaming video content. Email doesn't really show any difference and general web surfing is fine. It would depend on your usage but if it's email, light surfing, and of course spending hours on Club Polk, then I doubt you will see a dramatic difference.

If you have multiple users in the house that are on at the same time, that would be noticeable.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. My wife and I are on together most of the time.

It would definitely be noticeable. I recently bumped from 2M up to 6M and I noticed a big difference.

I will say one thing about DSL in general. My experience has been that although they offer "upgraded" DSL packages with 3, 5, & 6M speeds you rarely (if ever) come close to that. I suppose it depends on the voice infrastructure in your neighborhood and house wiring but DSL really pushes what a 24 gauge piece of bell wire can deliver. I had a 3M package for a few months that never delivered over 2.2M. The 1.5M at least delivered as promised. Cable is another story and seems to deliver what it promises (10+ in my case).

I would say with 2 users on on-board, 512K would not be enough. 1.5M might be worth a try but I would test it frequently and complain if you're not getting it.

I can share my experiences going from 14meg DSL to 100 meg fiber. The fiber is blazing fast, I'll be bumping up to 1gig line here in November.

Yup ... we seem to be at least five years behind France and Japan on this ... and we still pay more than the French, for about one quarter of the speed ... What makes it worse is they can get these high speed networks in small towns and rural areas even, whereas we can't even get it in L.A.

I can attest to this. My subscription is "6 MB" but when I take an internet speed test, 4.9 is the fastest Ive seen.

True you will be able to download an entire movie in just a few minutes. The fastest I am able to get up here is 12mb and it is actually more like 10-11mb at best for $99.99

The prices are insane back there in the USA. I'm not sure the cost is so freaking high back there. Hopefully things will catch up in the states sooner than later. I really dont know why they are behind on this stuff as mentioned earlier.

I'm curious if DSL is your only choice? Cable companies are offering speeds from 10-50Mbps which is very nice.
