    Default Rti a5 questions...

Here is a question for you guys. I have the Denon 2809 and am using it as 5.1 with the extra 2 channels as a Bi-Amp for the RTiA5 front L/R. The wattage per channel is 115. I am asking because I am thinking of buying a Rotel RB-1080 with 200 watts per channelx2 for the fronts and dont know if that will be an upgrade? My A5s are very good, but I feel they are still lacking. Would the upgraded amp help with imaging/sound quality/dynamics, or should I look to the a9 or something else for my speakers ? Do the A5 speakers have it in them to be great ?

Even though you have them "bi-amped", you're still only driving them with 115 watts each. The bi-amp feature in most AVR's is technically bi-wiring. The power for all of the channels on most AVR's comes from one common power block, so it's not as if the power output is going to be doubled by hooking them up to multiple pairs of outputs. The only exception to that is AVR's that have individual mono-blocks on each channel...the Denon 2809 doesn't though.

You would get an enormous upgrade with the Rotel 1080. I'd say go for it.

I agree about the bi amping... So you think the Rotel will give me a real boost in imaging/sound quality using the RTi a5s? Or would it be better to invest in better speakers like RTI a9, LSi (I also like B&W or Monitor Audio) first ?

I had the a5’s for about 6 months before I upgraded to the a9’s and I enjoyed the heck out of them!
With my Onkyo 806 they sounded great, but when I added a emotiva 2 channel they really came alive! You will notice an immediate improvement at lower volumes ( much more detail). Although the bass is respectable, when you add an external amp you might crave a bit more bass. A respectable sub should take care of this, IMO.

I ran the Rotel 1080 on my A5's and loved it. Great amp. If you really want to open them up for music go with a pre amp/ amp combo. Huge improvement.

Again, the a5's are respectable. a9's are for killer mid-range. With the a9's, I didn't find a need for a sub for music.

I agree with all the comments that have been posted. I have the a5's and I had a yamaha rxv-861 when I first got the speakers. They were defiatley two bright for my taste with the Yamaha. They did improve considerably once they had some burn in time. Then I bought a Pioneer elite avr and that was a huge improvement. I don't think that the a5's will ever be exceptional 2 channel speakers but hooked to a good power amp and or avr, you will notice a huge improvement.
