Default Question for Xbox 360/ Xbox live experts

I'm in the position where I can trade a old surround system that I'm not using for an Xbox 360 that has been modified to play games that have been burned on to DVD-R's and I think I read somewhere that if your xbox has been modified you cant play online with it , is that the case?

If the person flashed the drive before it was ever connected to Live, then you might be okay... for a while. New detections for modded hardware are released with each update they do. If they connected to Live then flashed the drive later, Microsoft can tell that the drive has been modified. At that point, they would ban your console from Live by its serial number.

In fairness, you shouldn't really be openly discussing illegal activities here. Software piracy is a crime.

I'm saying go out and purchase a new XBOX, not a modded XBOX. I would think if he didn't have high speed internet he wouldn't be asking about getting online in the first place. Just saying.

Buying a modified XBOX 360 depends on what you want to use it for. If you're an online player, I wouldn't risk it. If you get caught, you just paid $50 for a year subscription and you won't get a refund, and you're banned from xbox live.

If you like playing RPG, or any story modes only games, then modifying the XBOX would be to your benefit. Playing "back-up" copies of games saves you a ton of $$$.

I have heard that there are some mod-chips out there that are online safe.

I never said it was right. I was just providing some information to help his decision if he did trade his old surround sound system for a modified xbox 360.

EDIT: Basing on what I said, my assumption was to think he knew it was illegal.
