Wow. That dude defined 80's drum sound. I own several Genesis and maybe a couple solo records as well.
ouch..what a loss to the music world...he can still sing and compose hopefully
That sucks, he was always one of my favorites, In the earlier days he just seemed to be having such a good time playing, and was real good too.
That guy sure put out some damn good tunes. Of course, "In the Air Tonight" should be listed here... http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88037
Oh how I really hate that song.

I'm as big a Genesis fan as you will probably meet. As soon as I saw this post my heart rate jumped. I immediately began searching for additional information. Thankfully it turns out the the headline is not completely accurate as per Phil's own comments from the official Genesis site:

Still it is disturbing. I was never a huge fan of Phil's song writing style, but his skills as an arranger and of course drummer are what make him so special to me. I had always held out the hope that there would be a Genesis reunion tour with the classic five piece configuration, Peter on vocals and Phil on drums. I suppose this is still possible, if his condition improves over time. Crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath...

The possibility of Phil improving is still there....but the possibility of the classic Genesis lineup reunion tour is definitely on hold for the next 2 years, pending Phil's condition. Phil has previously said that he'd rather play drums and have Peter Gabriel do the lead vocals if such a tour was to happen.
Time to retire and spend all that cash he made over the years!

According to latest news, Phil is planning to release a Motown cover album in 2010.
Cool! I knew he couldn't stay inactive for too long.
I seem to recall R. Plant and J. Page not having any glowing remarks when Phil sat in as drummer for a Zep reunion show. Don't recall the details - please correct if I am wrong.

Phil played on Plant's first two solo albums Pictures at Eleven and The Principle of Moments and toured with him after the second album. I had not heard any negative comments about Phil's appearance with Plant and Page during the reunion show, although it's possible. The Live Aid performance was apparently hated by Plant and Page because of lack of rehearsal time and a few other factors. Plant called it an atrocity. I don't think that was a comment on Phil, just the overall show. I know that Phil and Plant had enjoyed working with each other in the past....

Didn't the Live Aid performance also involved the late Tony Thompson (Chic, Power Station)?
Yes it did. Two drummers, apparently did not go as well as they had planned...
