Nice...those are 2A's. $200 is a pretty good price...that's what I paid for mine. Mine already had RD0's installed though.

Good speakers for a fair price - what I paid for mine a couple of years ago.

Hmmm, a bit tempting, I would be interested in hearing those...not enough to buy them though, I'm happy with the speakers I've got.

I'm considering picking these up, but was curious if an Adcom 555 would be enough to power them or if I need to step up to something more powerful (like the 5802 or 565 monoblocks).

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

It would power them. Maybe not to 100% of their potential, but it would drive them very acceptably.

An adcom 555 is plenty. Your sc-05 will even push them.

    Really?!

Have you tried? Because I definitely don't want to spend the extra cash on a 555 if I don't have to!

It doesn't take too much to make them sing. But if you want them to roar, drive them with 400-500 Watts per channel. (Recommended is like 50-500 WPC. Keep in mind they are a 4-ohm speaker, not 8 ohm)

FWIW, I'm running about 400 WPC and I have never turned it up all the way, even in a large room - they are REALLY loud.

I drive my 2A's with an Adcom GFA-545...and it's plenty powerful. A little more power would be nice, but I've never run into any issues with not having enough power. I've also run them off of my Onkyo 606 plenty...does a fine job.

Wow... that really surprises me as I never thought an AVR would be able to run a 4 ohm speaker. Are you running them as "Large" speakers or crossing them over and letting your sub take over bass duty?

What have you noticed as the difference between running them with your Onkyo and the Adcom?

Why do you say you think a "little more" power would be nice?

Just want to make sure these things are going to sound great with my SC-05 so I know what I'm getting myself into before I buy...

The 2A's are 8 ohm nominal. They're pretty efficient too, so they're really pretty easy to drive.

I've run them both large and small on the Onkyo. Right now I've got them on small, and crossed over at 80hz, with my sub crossed at 120hz. It blends pretty well.

What have you noticed as the difference between running them with your Onkyo and the Adcom?
There's a world of difference. The Onkyo is nowhere near as musical sounding as the Adcom. I've got a lot more headroom as well when they're hooked up to the Adcom. During really dynamic passages, it's able to play louder and cleaner.

Most AVR's really can't compare to a good external amp.

FWIW, I don't really find my Onkyo to be very musical for the most part. From everything I've ever heard, the SC-05 is a much better sounding AVR.

All that being said, I don't ever really use the Onkyo for music. Whenever I'm listening to music I've got my speakers hooked up to the Adcom, with my dedicated 2 channel system. They're only hooked up to the Onkyo when I'm watching movies.

Why do you say you think a "little more" power would be nice?
More power is nearly always a plus. Exceptions can be made with tube amps, and Class A solid state amps among other designs, but as far as most amps go, the more wattage the better.

With more wattage you get more clarity at both lower volumes and higher volumes. You have more dynamics during intense passages...more headroom...It's also a lot better for the speakers. The speakers themselves won't be required to work as hard to achieve higher volume levels, so you'll be able to run them louder without fear of damaging the speakers.

Just want to make sure these things are going to sound great with my SC-05 so I know what I'm getting myself into before I buy...
I've never personally heard the SC-05 before...but I've read nothing but praise for the SC-0x series. Whenever I upgrade my AVR, there's a good chance I'll get an SC-07.

I'm sure they'll sound great with the 05. Like I said, an external amp would still most likely sound better, but you'll be fine without one too. If you ever decide to get an external amp, you'll likely be in for some big improvements though.

    Thanks!

    Default 2a or 2b?

Hi, the photos above appear to be what I have as well, and I thought they were 2b. But I have read some posts saying the 2b have a post/prong interconnect, mine are the two prong. I am wondering mainly because of the ohm rating. I'd appreciate advice toward figuring it out.

Also, I have one s2000 tweeter and one that appears to be the rdo -- I guess the guy replaced one. I am sold on getting another rdo, but do the 2000 have a loyal following? Would I be changing too far away from the original speaker voicing?

Sorry, there is a difference in mine and the photos. Mine don't a wide wood border at the bottom. They have what appears to be about a 1 inch think pc of wood on the top and bottom, the rest is grille. Thanks.

Yep, tried them on my SC-07 and the it had enough power for my 2b's.
Give it a try before you buy an external amp.

I was actually wondering the same thing. Can I see the model from the outside or do I have to open up the cabinet and look at the back of the speakers?

And yeah, I'll get some pics up this weekend when I get home - in NY this week for work. But trust me, these things are in absolutely PERFECT condition :)

You'll need to remove the drivers to see the model numbers. It will be on a label on the back of the magnet.

Hmm... well, I am curious as to what they are, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to do that because I wouldn't want to ruin anything on these perfect speakers. Is it really simple to do or is there any chance that I could damage something by trying that?

The drivers are pretty easy to remove, and you'll only need to remove one driver to know what you have. If the driver is an MW6510, then you've got 2A's, if the driver is an MW6503 or an MW6511, they're 2B's.

There is a gasket behind the drivers that makes the cabinets airtight, so the passive radiators will work efficiently.

It's easiest when the speaker is laying on it's back. This way the mid-woofer won't fall when you remove the screws.

As I said, there's an adhesive gasket behind the MW's, so it maybe a little stubborn coming out at first. If you can't get it out with only your hands, use a thing flat head screw driver. Don't pry on the driver, but lift up on the screw driver. You may need to go around the driver and do the same thing with the screw driver to loosen it.

I'd imagine that you should be able to pull the driver with just your hands though. The drivers on my 2A's come out pretty easily.

I've got a couple questions for anyone with some SDA knowledge...

Did all of the 2A's come with blade/blade IC's?

Did all of the 2B's come with pin/blade IC's? I seem to recall some of the 2B's have blade/blade IC's.

If there are blade/blade 2B's, can the TL mod still be performed on them, or is that option exclusive to the pin/blade 2B's?
