The Jimi Hendrix Experience [Box Set] Remastered

This 4-CD box set, released in 2000, has only recently been brought to my attention.



Anybody have or at least listened to this? Song selection? Sound Quality?

For someone, such as myself, who has no Hendrix, would this be a decent move?

I own it and really enjoy it. The SQ is ok but better than most grainy ****ty Hendrix recordings. The variety of songs is diverse and a welcome change from the multitude of re-issues of "Experience Hendrix".

Probably the best retrospective of Hendrix and the Experience. I have it and love it. There are quite a few rare live recordings and alternate takes so the quality does vary, but being a bootleg collector for 30 years this is bettern than 95% of the same stuff in circulation and some I've not seen before.

I do highly recommend it if you are a Hendrix fan, it has a great booklet and the music choices give you a great insight to Hendrix as a composer, musician, jam artist and vagabond. Jimi just loved jamming whenever he could.

Cool; thats all I need to hear. About 15 years ago, I bought a really bad sounding Hendrix Greatest Hits CD from CD stall in Beijing...undoubtedly it was a bootleg and while the sound was terrible, it provided enough of a glimpse beyond his well known tunes for me to know that I'd like to dig deeper.

This set will definately join All Things Must Pass on my Xmas list. Capitol/Apple Corp. has effectively sucked up all of my disposable moneys for music for the time being. Those bastards!

B&N has it for $50 ($45 if a member)
Amazon has it for $54, but according to camel3--it was selling at Amazon for ~$36 in June.

I too don't own ay JH, I'm placing it on my watch list - the price will likely drop down again.

Looks like a nice box set. I'd spring for it, but I have a lot of Jimi's stuff on vinyl and the "Stages" CD box set. I'm sure this is OOP already.

Electric Ladyland was the album, the long version of VooDoo Chile was the tune. It is a Hendrix album to own. Are You Experienced, Axis:Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland are mandatory Hendrix albums to own. Those are the three that were released while he was alive.

I have the outtakes (bootleg) of Electric Ladyland and those are just as outstanding as what was finally mixed and released.

Another must have Hendrix cd is the Blues cd.

+1 and then some. I got them on CD and the original vinyl in pristine condition.

Since I'm not a vinyl spinner, can you (or somebody else) let me know a bit about the pressing of these three studio albums on CD? I did a search on Jimi Hendrix here, but there was so much discussion about the varying quality of different re-releases that I left more confused than when I began.

If you're satisfied with the sound, maybe you could let me know of the record company / release year. I'd like to pick these up in addition to the aforementioned box set over time.

Norm, ever since Jimi's death there have been huge issues over his posthumously released material. From Alan Douglas actually bringing in session muscians to 'help' finish many studio tracks, to Reprise releasing everything under the sun incomplete and bastardized, etc. To MCA trying to 'fix' what Alan Douglas and Reprise screwed up.

Recently Janie Hendrix (Jimi's half sister) and his late father finally secured control of his estate and the music and current releases are on the Experience Hendrix label.

His musical legacy is a very confusing thing to follow. I have most of the Reprise, MCA and Rykodisc stuff which is all out of print now as well as the Experience Hendrix stuff. It's all slightly different as far as quality and song selection (version and mix). You really can;t go wrong with the recent Experience Hendrix stuff. I'd stay away from the Reprise Label stuff.

Johhny B. Goode and others are all bastardized Alan Douglas mixes where Jimi doesn't even play on half the songs. Instead session muscians are brought in to finish the 'sketch' of a song and they passed it off as Jimi Hendrix and the Experience. Dreadful.

If you stick to some of the MCA stuff like Blues and the Experience Hendrix label you'll get the good stuff.

The major 3 released GG mentioned on the Experience Hendrix label are worth getting. It's when you start getting into his other releases that confusion can set in because of all the versions available. There are some outstanding releases besides the (3) original Hendrix releases. Live the the Fillmore w/the Band of Gypsys is outstanding. A different type of vibe, but impressive. They cut that album just to fulfill the final album contract with Capitol. Experience Hendrix released a 2cd set that covers all 3 nights they played at the Fillmore over New Years Eve. The original Capitol release only had 5 or 6 songs and it was hard to tell what night they were actually from. Some even speculated a few songs were patched together from a couple different nights.

Also the really great thing about the Experience Hendrix releases is they have terrific liner notes and photo's.

Stages is OOP, I bought mine several years ago sans the outer box for $60. It's not too bad. Atlanta 1970 is the best of the bunch. Very few live tracks from these 4 shows are on the box set. It is one I recommend picking up, but only after you have everything else.

When Experience Hendrix finally took control from MCA I feared they would release the Stages box set and render my collectable worthless. But as of about a year ago they had no plans to re-release this on the Experience Hendrix label.

Another one for collector's only is the box set Lifelines, mediocre at best. For completists only, IMO.

I used to have a bunch of bootleg stuff including the sotheby's tape (in flac I think) and various other studio outtakes. Lost with a HD crash. I'm gonna have to hunt that stuff down again.

I had the European Nekkid Ladies version. The one they couldn't or wouldn't release here. Supposedly better pressing.

A Columbia employee friend of mine ( back then) named Speedy was a big Hendrix groupie. Well, follower, concerts all over the place.
Talked about these creazy jam sessions with Mike Bloomfield and Johnny Winter in NY. Said at one point Hendrix adopted Winters' very distinctive style, and Winters did the same vicey-versy, playing a la Jimi.
That would be some interesting stuff if tapes turned up of it....

Right on George! I played the grooves out of my Electric Ladyland, with the blacklight on and the dayglo posters on the wall. Real groooovy!:D Wow man! Sock it to me! It's outta' sight!

I know I started a thread somewhere on here about good sounding Jimi. IIRC there was a thread mentioned in my thread by an old poster that had some good info in it, his name was Rocket something maybe?

The Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: Jimi Hendrix has a great sounding version of Voodoo Chile. The Experience Hendrix releases of the studio albums sound pretty good as well.

Brock knows his stuff WRT Hendrix. I'd follow his lead any day.

Don't forget all the Nekid Ladies on the cover of Electric Ladyland. Good songs, and good album art to contemplate. I bought that in a head shop/record store in Georgetown DC in 68 or 69. The good ole days when the drinking age was 18 in DC, but 21 in Maryland.

There was a cd version that combined the two into one. Great overview on Jimi's best stuff.

^^^agreed it was good stuff at the time. But it's on Reprise and supervised by Alan Douglas. Alan Douglas releases leave a lot to be desired. I have the 2-cd set and it is OOP and still fetches a decent amount on ebay............but the Experience Hendrix stuff is much better IMO.
