I took my daughter to her first concert last night

Yup, her first concert, and thank gawd it wasn't Milie Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, or some othe crap like that (unlike some of her other 16 yr old friends). She's listened to my music for years, and has adopted her own tastes.

So last night we along with a friend of hers went to see The Killers. Considering I'm not really a fan of the current crop of alternative bands, they put on a smokin show. Good lights, good sound and they're a lot better live then they are on their studio stuff.

We started out eating at the Hard Rock Cafe in Phoenix, and then went to the show. All in all it was a good evening, even for dad.

LOL... I love Neil Diamond. He gave me front row tickets after I installed a cell-phone in his car. For all you youngsters out there, cellphones used to look alot like home phone handsets and had brains the size os a suitcase...

Anyway, my first concert was John Denver in 1973.

My son's first 2 years ago when he was 12 was The Blue Man Group. Great show! Then of course about a month ago we went to AC/DC. Fantastic! It's very cool you can do stuff like that with your daughter and that would be a great show.

polkfan45 - I saw a lot of good concerts at the UNI Unidome in Cedar Falls! Guess Who, Alice Cooper, Rolling Stones, Bachman Turner Overdrive, are a few that come to mind.

Hey! I saw The Killers, a loooong time ago, in Philthydelphia, at The Electric Factory I think it was? Might have been the TLA. I heard their arena shows are pretty spiffy but The Electric Factory and The TLA are much more intimate and they put on spectacular shows there.

If you liked The Killers, check out The Kings of Leon, Finger Eleven, Modest Mouse and Toxic Airborne Event. They all have that odd mix of alternative rock mixed with the pop sound. There are other bands out there like Jet that have a definitive classic rock influence and are, honestly, one of the best bands to come out in the past decade.

If you want a more punk'ish flavor, go for bands like Breaking Benjamin or Seether. they both do great shows and usually have some pretty good bands tagged on to their shows as well.

Holy Crap! I grew up in Cedar Falls! Went to a ton of shows at the Dome!


First concert was Helen Reddy (?) and Orleans at the cattle congress in Waterloo.

I wasn't calling them punk. Just saying they had punk influences. Breaking Benjamin isn't really punk either but you can hear definite influences from bands like The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and Blondie in the music from both bands. Besides, both BB and Seether are made up of guys that were probably conceived at a punk rock concert and they listened to what their parents played on the "hi-fi" when they were growing up. Probably because the 'rents were trying to relive their "rebellious youth" because they sit behind a desk all day now and became "the man".

There are other bands out there that are real, modern punk. Some of them go way over the top with the theatrics and controversial messages. Some to the point where it's no longer flying in the face of good taste but rather just intentionally offensive in how low they try to stoop. That kind of misses the idea behind punk, I think. But it's all in the name of some "message" that isn't really relevant either. Punk was all about the stuff nobody wanted to recognize. It took the issues and problems with society and rolled them over and stuck it in the soft underbelly. It used the offensive imagery to attract attention. Still, there are other new bands who are very much like The Ramones and Blondie who blend actual artistic and musical talent with the propagation of their "message" quite well.

The drag is that punk was not mainstream and then, in the early 80's, it was and it lost it's edge. Now all the purists out there go and bag on new acts because it's not "real punk".

BUT! Look around at alot of the new "rock" bands out there. Especially those who blend stuff like rap with rock, like Linkin Park, and tell me that there isn't a punk influence there. There's punk and techno and that 80's synthesizer stuff and even the sampling from rap/hip-hop in all of it.

As controversial as punk was, it was also hard to define and spanned genres. There was stuff really radio friendly like alot of stuff from Blondie and there was stuff really offensive like everything from The Sex Pistols. But above it all, even after the punk scene imploded, the music lived on. Blondie is now on easy listening, classic rock and oldies stations. So are The Ramones and even some Sex Pistols stuff. Hell, I was at a radio station promotional thing last week and "I Wanna Be Sedated" was one of the songs spun by the DJ and EVERYBODY knew the words. 21-years-old to way-too-old-to-be-there, didn't matter everyone was singing and dancing to The Ramones. Punk influences as much as any other type of music out there and it's quite prevalent in the newer bands because those kids grew up listening to what mom and dad were tuning in to on the car radio and what they were spinning on the turntables at home. That was a good deal of Punk, New Age and Classic Rock.

If an Arcade Fire concert had been my very first, I think I would have been spoiled for life. Their shows are on a whole other level.

Did they play anything from the "Hot Fuss" cd? I never could really get into them when they came out with "Sam's Town" or whatever it was, but Hot Fuss is one of my all time favorite albums.

Well, the large auditorium/arena show I'm told is very different from a small stage show. The TLA is real tight, only about 1000 in capacity and standing room only. The Electric Factory is very much the same but holding closer to 3,000 people. They do have some reserved seating with tables and it's quite expensive. But in either venue, you can be in the back "row" but still closer than most "pits" in arenas or auditoriums. So it was decidedly smaller than the venue you were in and the stage is smaller too. But crowd interaction is much higher and sound is of a higher quality and closer to what you would find in a large jazz club. Philly has a few venues like this as well as some other ones in the outlying areas.

BTW, The Theater of The Living Arts (TLA) is also known as The Filmore.

There is another venue that I've seen many bands at long before they hit the mainstream and that is The Pennant East. I used to go for "White Trash Wednesdays" which was a "ladies drinks half off" night and it attracts a fairly "diverse" crowd. But it's a coveted night for bands because they get good turn out. But the owners of The Pennant East have told me that if you can fill the Pennant on a Wednesday night, you're gonna be a big deal band/name/group in the future. He's right too because I watched Live and a few other bands there before they became much bigger deals.
