Default Hard request: Need a sample name

    At least i think it's a sample.

The artist is Snow Patrol, track is "Somewhere a Clock is Ticking," off of their album "Final Straw."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLg7zXlgNus

(One of my favorite bands, by the way, but that's for another thread.)

Anyways, the sound is throughout the "refrains" where he's just singing "aaaaaaaaahhhh" over and over again. But the two parts where it really stands out and you realize that "oh, maybe that WASN'T a guitar..." are at points 2:45 and 4:22.

It almost sounds like it COULD be a theramin with some distortion, but the problem is that it's too percussive.

Any ideas? Or by some miracle does someone have enough experience with synths to know the sample name and how to get it off the top of their head? I need it for some ideas that i've been slowly working on for years.

I appreciate any help in this near but impossible request! :p

It sounds like a Metallophone (Xylophone made with metal), you know the instrument with flat metal plates of descending sizes, hit with a felt or wood tipped stick/ mallet. Everyone had one as kids. Xylophone are made of wood, or when made of metal, Metallophone. Never knew they had a different name. Below is fancy one. Ours were basic plates., multicolored.

Actually, after doing some more research, I was thinking of a Vibraphone, is the correct name, called 'vibes' by jazz musicians...

Vibes might be it.... but it's run through a synth or something.... it's got a definite electric "vibe" to it. :p

The hammer dulcimer idea is interesting.... i could definitely see how that would be possible. There isn't much percussiveness to it, but it's definitely there. A soft "pluck" could create what's going on.

I like all these ideas... give me more! :D I appreciate it!

Hey man, have you checked liner notes or their website/forum? Perhaps that would provide a definitive answer.

I've checked the liner notes, couldn't find anything....

I haven't checked their forum, i guess that would be the logical thing to do, considering that this is one of their most popular songs of all time among fans i guess.... :p

Thanks for giving me the reality dope slap!

No slap intended ;) Just my first thought. Speculation and conjecture might be fun, but a straight answer might prove more useful. Good luck!

Oh i know... i guess i tend to do things the hard way. I'll get on that, i appreciate it. :)

The speculation WAS fun, though... so everyone can feel free to continue doing that, or even give examples of other songs that have similar sounds? :)
