Just a guess but it looks like the silver things probably are connected through a belt system and they rotate to separate the lowest record in the stack so it can be dropped independently,while still holding the rest of the stack of records up.
There's a "pusher arm" on each of the 3 larger metal pieces. They're just wide enough to push on the lowest record in the stack.
Pretty cool. The head of the tone arm is wide to allow the user to stack plenty of pennies for good tracking, too. :)

I probably wouldn't recommend stacking shellac discs, though...
