Insignia VS Vizio

Well this coming christmas I will be in the market to buy a 37-42 inch lcd tv. About 2 years ago I bought a Dynex tv on black friday. Brought it home hooked it up to a BR player looked amazing. Well funds were short so the tv went back. This time I have the budget for it. So I keep seeing commercials for vizio and how they are the best and bla bla bla. So which one should I choose? Will be used for 80% movies and 20% tv watching via antenna. Also looking at dynex which is sort of the same as insignia only I have hear insignia is a bit better.

On a side note, yes I know I am not talking about your top of the line sony's or anything like that. But it is what I am looking for, for right now.

I was on that boat looking for a bigger TV on a budget. Well last x-mas we purchased our Insignia 37" LCD TV. Not the cheaper 720p/1080i either, I spent a little more because I figured why not.

Well, I love everything about it. Having owned several different LCD's (2 Toshiba models) I think this one's really held up for what I paid for it. It's never given me any probs, and everything looks just as good as other TV's I've seen at a much higher price. I considered Vizio but something about the cheaper looking build quality detracted me from it. Also, whenever my wife and I went to buy dog food or the sort there were ALWAYS Vizio's there being returned every single time......and I still see them. This was while I was in CA, and now IL too? I just heard that they tend to break down rather easily.

Oh and as far as the Dynex, I'd say in terms of quality the Dynex and Vizio seem to be in the same league. We own a 19" LCD Dynex TV for the bedroom (that we sometimes use as a monitor too) and love the quality of it. Heck I'm using it right now to post this :D

For the money, you can't go wrong...so +1 Insignia.

If it was me I would go with the Vizio LCD, but only one of the models from them that includes Silicon Optixs' Reon Video Processing Chip. It takes there LCD TV's to a whole other level and are still very very reasonably priced.

Thanks kawi, I was gonna post this same query, but you just answered my question.

I've got a 4 y.o. Westinghose, 32" LCD, aside from some overheating issues, it's held up pretty good.

I am not a fan at all of westinghouse a friend of mine had 2 of them both broke plus never looked right.

Sorry concealer404. I don't remember off the top of my head, unless I go back Vizios website. I know that processing was used in their best 55inch model, but I swore they trickled that technology down due their smaller models.------Bill(BB3)

I'll have to do some research on that. I'm in the market for an LCD/Plasma in the same size as bigaudiofanatic as well, will probably pick something up this weekend. I hope that processing trickled down, as a 55" would be out of my budget and way too large for the distance i'd be sitting away. :p

IDK about current models, but I bought a Visio GV47LFHDTV20A 3-4 years ago from Costco and have never had an issue with it. It is a 47" 1080p LCD. But that was back when Visio were just hitting the market, at least around here, so it's maybe the case that they started out strong (comment about them being cheap) The features are alittle basic, but then LCD were just breaching the 40" plus range. I liked it because it has a clean piano black bezel and the speakers are on the bottom and detachable. Unfortunately they don't sell them anymore, so I don't know if I have been of any help.

Here is link it is listed on sale at $599 but I am 99% sure I saw it at my local Target for $499 but the sale ended Monday. Could be it will go back on sale again, maybe not. Also not too familiar with that model, so maybe it is not that good of a deal at $599 but I don't think you could go wrong at the $499 price.

Not sure how stuck you are on LCD or your budget but thought I would toss this out there.

Well yes plasma would be better but I trust lcd better. Just something about the cheaper plasmas I do not care for.

BAF, i'm not trying to jack your thread, i promise. :)

I know that there's been lots of LCD vs. Plasma debates, which is why i bring this up. There's a certain Vizio model that has caught my eye

Model VP422HDTV10A. I can find it everywhere for within my budget ($500 or less) and it's a 42" Plasma. Doesn't support 1080P, but the more i read, the more i realize that doesn't matter with this screen size.

Two things that worried me from reviews: The "Green" color rendering seems a little off, but if it's not glaringly bad, i can deal with it. And 2) You can't change the aspect ratio of the TV for HD sources, so you're stuck with whatever is sent to it from the video source.

Does anyone have an experience with this unit? And if so, is concern #2 even a big deal? I would imagine that HD programming would be in widescreen format anyways, wouldn't it? So it would fit the screen the way it should without any stretching?

I haven't experienced the Insignia brand, but my TV at home is a Vizio purchased from Costco two years ago. It was used as a monitor and TV for one year, so basically it was never turned off during that time (unless I was moving things around and needed to unplug it or the computer).

The only bad thing I can say is that there seems to be a little light leakage around the bottom of the frame from the LCD. It doesn't affect anything and you'd never really notice unless you were looking for flaws. But the contrast ratio is good enough that I can watch TV with the blinds open and the sun shining in on it.

Also, due to a great return policy, I think every model that Costco sells has to meet a certain degree of quality, so keep that in mind when looking at the brands youa re considering!

Actually Dynex is BB's house brand.. so people aren't confused,.. but i would be interested in know if its true that insignia really is made by LG.. I've always avoided their products b/c they look cheaper to me than even Vizio. Its a shame that Oleivia went under.. When they were around they were really had some of the best price to quality ratios out there.

**edit after some research it looks like both could be house brands for BB, I know Dynex is but i'm not positive whether insignia is or not.

Actually, both Dynex and Insignia are Best Buy's brands. Crack open an Insignia LCD or Plasma and you will see all the components labeled as "LG". Their televisions are great, the rest of their stuff, not so much.

They are usually last years models rebadged is all.

Well after looking online and comparing tv's at the store I have finally figured out which one to get. I am going to go with the 42 inch insignia with the 120hrz. To be honest seeing the 60hrz and than the 120hrx I could not really tell the difference even with them hooked up directly to the players. But I figured for 120 bucks more why not get the better one. Thanks for all your help and will have pics and all of how it turns out when BF comes around. Thanks everyone.

Paired with a nice BD/DVD player, you should be very pleased. Do yourself a favor and do a setup calibration on your new display. Netflix actually rents either the AVIA or DVE calibration discs if you don't have one. You will be glad you did it.
