    Default dvd players with dacs

If a dvd player has good dacs (dont even know wtf they are) then would the best way to hook it up to a crappy cheap receiver be via rca red white, digital coax or optical toslink ?

you want to use the best DAC's you have available, so you would run the RCA's out.
IF it has 5.1 output, then use that for HT.

What about 5.1 using rca if there is only 2 outs on the dvd player ? If this is best then I will get some from monoprice

Hmmm..Get your read on. Do some research on DACs...5.1 isnt possible with only 2 outs.Is there an optical or digital output on the back of the dvd player. And what dvd player is it may I ask.? Does your receiver have optical or digital inputs?

If you want to use the DVD player's DAC then you need to use the analog out. If you use a digital output (fiber, coax) then you will use the DAC of whatever equipment the cable goes to.

That is it! Simple as math 1+1 =2. There is no other way around it. I would recommend to hook up both analog and digital connections the same time (1.) L/R analog out from DVD Player to AVR CD input and (2.) Coaxial or Optical output from DVD Player to AVR either Coaxial or Optical input.

Choose the CD input on the AVR ( analog) and listen a few tracks. Then switch the AVR input that is assigned to the Coaxial or Optical digital input and listen to the same tracks. You should be able to tell if both Dacs are pretty much the same or there is a difference.

Do you have the Onkyo 606?

I doubt the difference will be day and night.

He may not have all 5.1 pre-outs on his dvd player. If that is the case, the only way to get dolby digital surround is by the optical. He can hook up the analog left and right if he wants to play redbook cd's in 2 channel.

That's where things get interesting. If you're wanting to test out the quality of the players DAC's, the quality you hear will be somewhat limited due to the fact that you'll be using some 'low end' interconnects. If you're not a cable believer or don't want to start dishing out extra $ then just go with optical and let your AVR do all the work. :)

Ok, then just go with the simpler solution if SQ isn't of your biggest priority. By the way, what type/model is this DVDP if you don't mind me asking?

The Xbox should have passable sound on the Onkyo with a digital connection?

And redbook CDs are the STANDARD for the highest quality that was adopted for CD sound when the CD was developed. Most CDs that you buy are redbook recordings.

Correct me if I am wrong ,the 607 has Burbrown Dacs (?) . I would think the Dacs in the Onkyo 607 is a better way to go for Movies Playback . Optical cables come in different grade . Eventhough the signals are transfered by glass or clear plastic, the premium optical always cost more than the dirt cheap one for a reason.

Your Marantz will only do standard DVDs ( red book) and will not read the blu-ray disc.

Monoprice has some cheap Optical cables. Do not buy the fancy heavy metal connector, they do not fit snuggly and may get loose.

If you have coaxial out, try the Better Cable Coaxial. For video, just run the component cables straight to for Tv.

Oop, my bad. Your Marantz does have HDMI ouput . Just use the HDMI cables and let the 607 does the rest. End of the story.

Monoprice HDMI is very nice. I bought several HDMI 1.3 Cat2 with net jacket from them and I cannot tell any difference between the Moniprice premium HDMI Vs the Monster Ultra 1000 HDMI. You either have the bandwith or you don't.

For analog cables, it is another animal.
