I recently did research for a P&S camera of the next generation, to replace an aging Canon S50 and came up with this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSho...6243654&sr=1-9

A relative bought one and showed me the results including the HD video from it. I can't believe how good they were. Price is in your ballpark, and based on my experience on Canon P&S, they lasted. My purchase would be a Christmas gift for the wife (so that she stop playing with my Nikon DSLR when she goes camping along with my son's scout troops). :)
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Canon Powershot SD780IS or something better. much less than your proposed budget, too.

When compared to an DSLR yes the sony is lacking but believe me for a point and shoot it has great picture quality and the video quality is topnotch as well. you also cant' beat the features for the price. the panorama feature is really kewl as is the 10fps to catch fast action. I'll be honest when at max zoom the quality is sometimes a little rough if you are not using a tripod but tha't pretty much always an issue with all super zoom point and shoots. It also has a system that allows you take pretty decent lowlite pictures as well. the biggest problem though will be the noise reduction feature.. if you zoom in too much looking at apicture you can definitely tell that the noise reduction is working. over all for 379.. the sony is well worth it ymmv
