Pennies might work, but the poor packing concerns me.
I don't like the idea of lead shot, since lead is toxic if ingested--and the little pieces could easily escape to be eaten by pets or children. Iron shot would be fine.
Dry, sterile sand and kitty litter both offer good packing and damping.

Lead shot, there is no substitute.

Cash the pennies in to buy lead shot or sand.

Quote from their site:
It remains a fact that sand, lead and rubber materials are a solution to treat the negative effects of resonance and vibrations. However, these materials absorb dynamics and micro-dynamics when used with audio and acoustical equipment. They literally soak up and destroy the energies that make the musical presentation exhilarating.

I have not found that to be the case. However, these materials absorb dynamics and micro-dynamics when used with audio and acoustical equipment. They literally soak up and destroy the energies that make the musical presentation exhilarating.

I use No 8. I found a retired couple locally that used to load their own. They had a basement full of this stuff. They charged me $8 per bag (25 lb).

I've used #5 and #7. This stuff is so small I don't think it really matters.

I found the lead shot to be prohibitively expensive. I use play sand from the local Home Depot.
..what is the property in lead that makes it good for audio. Is it because it is soft ...absorption of sound , or at least less transmission.
I have these stands w/ Snell type E/III's....how much shot would I need?

1,000,000 lbs.
A $3 bag of sand from Home Depot works great for me.

Cash in the pennies, buy the cement and sand bags, mix together with water, use a funnel, pour down the throat, and let it dry.
No lead shots or pennies. Lead is very environmental unfriendly! Difficult to dispose properly.

I always use silver bullets since Lead bullets are very environmental unfriendly. :D
It has been my thought that the material you fill stands with is supposed to help by turning vibration into heat. Is that correct? And, if so, it has to move to make the heat, correct? So it would be better to use lead shot rather than melt the lead and pour it in?
