Its funny -- I've had Pink Floyd on the brain all night. Maybe its because I watched "The Making of Dark Side of the Moon" earlier this evening, and am in the middle of a marathon listening session -- first Momentary Lapse of Reason, then Animals and now Obscured.

Anyway, Danny, aside from the SACD of DSOTM I was wondering if you or anyone else has suggestions for better versions I have of the following:

    Meddle (Capitol)
    WYWH (Columbia)
    Animals (Columbia)
    Obscured by Clouds (Capitol)

Each of the editions I have were purchased in 1993/94, and it looks like these were issued ca. 1990.

I like each of these albums so much I'd am very willing to upgrade, though not pay some outrageous price....maybe $30 tops for each.

I see that several were remastered and reissued in 2000, but no sure if that would be a move up or down, if they went crazy with the loudness.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

    The best, IMO...

    Meddle - MoFi
    WYWH - Mastersound

You will pay a lot more than $30.00.

*cringe* that's what I was afraid to here...

Considering how long the sacd release of wywh is in coming makes me think of some lyrics from another PF album:

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you....
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Speaking of the album WYWH, I've read recently that when they were recording it in 1975 a balding, overweight stranger showed up at the studio. Either Nick Mason or Richard Wright (can't recall) turned to Roger Waters, and asked "Who is that?" Roger replied, "Why that's, Sid" Yes, after leaving the band 7 years earlier due to serious mental health issues owing to too many psychotropic drugs, Syd Barrett showed up at the studio out of blue. This was the first time his former bandmates had seen him since he left. The interesting thing, I think, is that Shine On You Crazy Diamond had been written with him in mind.

Not true. David Gilmour and Roger Waters did some recording with him and still visited him from time to time.

However, Nick and Richard may not have seen him.

BTW... there is footage or a photo from that appearance (can't remember which) that is hauntingly surreal. He looked like a ghost.

It was. Almost everything they ever wrote (Waters era Floyd anyway) was written with him in mind. WYWH was completely about Syd according to the band.

Syd was paid royalties on everything Pink Floyd did (even after his departure) and died quite wealthy.

I didn't realize that those two maintained a working relationship with him, but after further checking I found that indeed it was Rick Wright who didn't recognize Syd when he showed up to Abbey Road studios unexpectedly.

Is this the picture of Syd you're referring to:

One other interesting note I read was that members of The Pink Floyd, as they were called then, first met The Beatles at Abbey Road studios after the latter laid down the track "Getting Better" for Sgt. Peppers, and the former was recording Piper at the Gates of Dawn. At that stage in his career, I think Lennon probably had quite a bit in common with Syd Barrett.

That would be it. Seems there might be film though, I could be mistaken.

I so love the mythology that surrounds this band. Not only were they groundbreaking, they were larger than life.

Did anybody catch Roger Waters' interview on the Jimmy Fallon show tonight (5/5/10? I'm usually not much of a Fallon fan, but he actually asked him some really interesting questions (i.e. about Syd Barrett's mentalcondition), and in one segment Roger sets straight the story I mentioned above. The interesting part he reveals was that it was actually him (Waters) who did not recognize Barrett when the latter showed up during the recording of "Shine On" about him, and it was Dave who first tipped him off to Syd's identity.

Also mentions that Pink Floyd were formerly known as "Megadeaths"

See the interview here, if you like.
