    Default Vpi 16.5 rcm

Just wanted to give hearingimpared (Joe) another shout out and thanks for helping me get a deal on a new VPI 16.5 RCM. I got a nice discount from Stephen Monte at Quest for Sound just for mentioning Joe's name and being a member of this board. I should have a nice VPI RCM by Chrissy and no more washing my LPs by hand. Yippie! Thanks again Joe and Club Polk. It's going to be a Merry Christmas. :)

Joe is an expert in all things vinyl. He has taught me a lot and is always very helpful to all the Polkies.

Mike, you'll love the VPI. It really does the job. However, if you are starting with a piece of junk the VPI cannot make a silk purse out of the sow's ear. I have had vinyl that looks absolutely pristine that sounded like it had been played with a nail. No scratches or marks, nice shiny, black, vinyl that sounded like ****.

Did you get two suction wands? One for cleaning fluid suction and one for rinse? Also, get a cork mat for the table. I also use Joe's clamp to hold down the record to the VPI platter. The little piece of plastic that comes with the machine can't supply enough down force to keep the record from slipping while vacumming. I cheat and will push down on the wand a little to maximize the wand contact.

    Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks Carl. I got all the little extras. Mat, cleaning wand, fluids and a bottle of vinylzyme gold that Joe recommended. Stephen gave me a 25% discount on all the extras and an excellent deal on the VPI itself. Close to 100.00 less than everyplace else I've checked.

Know what you mean when it comes to some records that look clean. It has to do with the materials that were used in the first place and if it was pressed properly, I think.
I had read an article awhile back that said in the late 70's and 80's, unsold vinyl used to be recycled to press new records. Explains why some can be noisey no matter how well it's cleaned. Got a few, but not many, fortunately.

If Carl would quit letting the neighborhood kids play his records on the Barbie portable turntable with the GrooveScaper 400 cart, he wouldn't have those problems ;)

Stephan is the MAN. He did me a solid on my Scoutmaster as well. Highly encourage Polkies to check him out!

Glad you got the VPI, you won't be sorry. I'd also recommend ****canning the brush that comes with the VPI and use and MFSL brush.

I'd also get a Shark steamer, if you don't already have one. I steam, scrub, vacuum, cleaning fluid, scrub, vacuum, rinse (distilled water), vacuum, brush, play.

Same thoughts here Mike. It's what I do and the end result is outstanding with Joe's clamp on a simple MMF-5 TT.

Yep, got a Shark Steam already. Been using it with my manual cleaning method. Works great and my method gets the job done, but it's just too much a PITA. Too hard on my friggen back to manually clean anymore with all the vinyl I've massed.

Troy, per your recommendation I just ordered 2 MoFi cleaning brushes with 4 extra pads.

I plan on getting the MoFi record wash and deep clean later, but I'm curious as to how good the stock VPI record wash is that comes with the machine??? I did pick up a bottle of vinylzine gold with my order, per Joe's recommendation. Good enough to get me by for now?

    TIA

I use the VPI brush for the Vinyl-Zyme gold scrubbing as it really does get all the mold release compounds and heavy gunk out. Then I use the MOFI brushes for the rest of the steps.

After I finished talking with you I checked my email. sleevecity sent me a promotional coupon for 17% off any order, so I pulled out the cc and ordered the MoFi Record Wash and Super Deep Cleaner and got the discount. Them Vinyl Gods work in mysterious ways. If anyone else wants to take advantage of this, the promotional code is:

Ok so washing your vinyl by hand may not have been such a bad thing. Buying a RCM can be something that leads to bad habits. A sore neck from twisting and turning it at every damn yard sale sign. Your ride will automatically steer into thrift stores with no notice. The walls of your listening area will be lined with rows and rows of vinyl including any available floor space. You'll be bidding on 100 piece lots of LP's and most of them are Polka. But who cares? You now have a RCM and the new toy has taken over your mind.

BTW..congrats on the RCM. I started with a 16.5 and loved it. Now stock up on your fluids and brushes. Find a little jar/bucket to put under the draining hose. And remember to keep the draining hose clamp shut. I forgot to close the clamp the first time I used my 16.5. Didn't take long for me to see that I forgot though.

I have boxes full of used vinyl that I haven't even opened yet. It's a sickness I tell ya!
