Subs for RT1000

Just purchase a pair of RT1000s quite by chance. I like the way they sounded and bought them on the spot...$250 for the pair seemed reasonable to me.

I have a lot of questions but will narrow it down to one for now: The 6.5 powered woofer seems to add a nice warmth to the lows but of course this is not a substitute for a real subwoofer.

My question is: are there any specific subwoofers requirements to look to compliment the 6.5 driver?. Specifically should I look for subs that can play well at 80, 100, 120 hz to match up with the 6.5 woofer?

Hi - you want the sub to cross over and play well above 80 but I would set my sights a little higher to 100. With 80 being the THX standard I would not run to close to that number.

What is the 6.5" frequency range?

Also, a sub of 10" to 12" usually has a nice roll off to 6.5" depending on your configuration

The problem is that I really don't know much about these rt1000 other than they have a 6.5 mid + a powered 6.5 transmission line woofer. No idea about xover order, frequency or rolloff of these drivers.

Okay..just found the data I was looking for:

Crossover (mid-high array) 2kHz; 1st order low pass, 2nd order high pass. Plus 80Hz 6 dB/octave high pass filter
Crossover (subwoofer) 80Hz, fixed Lower -3dB Limit 36Hz

I am only going by impressions but I highly doubt these speakers are playing 36 hz at f3.

I have these speakers. The built-in woofers have great punch but cannot come close to a dedicated subwoofer. I have 10" Velodyne that completed these speakers very nicely. With the freq range of the 6 1/2 woofer, you can't listed to all the low range detail in music or in movies.

I actually disabled the internal subs buy not plugging them in and letting sub to the work. This speaker produces excellent mid-range and highs which I believe it was intended for.

I agree with your description.

I bought these speakers because I like the option of using dedicated 12" powered subs as well as using the 6.5 woofers. I think it's a nice option to be able to turn both of them off depending on what your listening to.

I have a new Onkyo receiver with Audyssey EQ calibration system, it will be interesting to see what it tells me to do....I guess computers now tell us what sounds best....hahahahaha.
