Do you need analog outputs for the decoded new HT codecs or are you planning to upgrade to an AVR that handles the decoding via a HDMI connection from the BDP?

Will a PS3 last as long bluray player?

I heard they burn out after awhile.

I've had mine since they were released and haven't had a problem yet. The 360's are the ones with the problems, I'm on my 4th xbox 360.
All electronics are capable of failure, but The only person I personaly I know that had a PS3 problem just needed to get a new hard drive. Another good thing about the PS3's is that you can upgrade the hard drives to whatever size you want.
I really doubt there are any other blue ray players in that price range that will offer as much as the PS3, and that's not counting the games.

Have had mine for 3 years and love it. Every piece of electrical equipment will crap out eventually. The trick is not to help it get there faster, lol. Honestly though, for what it does, and what it costs, the PS3 is the best Blu Ray player out there, IMHO.

    Still not as many as,

    Do speaker wires matter ?

    What receiver to go with...?

    Bi-amping speakers with a 300 buck receiver ?

Seems as of late, the same questions keep popping up, maybe the search button needs a different color to stand out more.

+1 on PS3! Does ANYONE really think that all the 100 dollar plus units are going to last any longer than a PS3??

IMHO, best bang for the buck out there in the Blu Ray player department. All you hear is Oppo this and Oppo that, never seen one and I'm sure they are great with all the press they seem to get here. Still, I'm a PS3 man all the way.

PS3 is a great player as long as you don't need 5.1 analog out. Sony really dropped the ball on this one. Not everybody wants or needs HDMI.

Yeah, that is a valid point. I have all HDMI in my setup, so I never really saw the no 5.1 analog out as an oversight. Guess that could be a showstopper if you needed that.

I agree with the PS3. And yes the Early PS3's 20g, 40g and the 60g have problems and a lot of people are getting YLOD so It's not just the Xbox 360 or as bad as the 360 but the earlier one's are failing due to the BD drive.

But the PS3 is the best way to go. I just bought another one for my bedroom. I was lucky and Target had the 250G PS3 slim on Clearence last week for $244.98. The Ps3 you can go On-line, stream it does everything. Great pc of equipment to own.

If you just want a BD player to play BD's and do nothing else look at the JVC. It's called the poor mans oppo. Faster loading times the then PS3, better SD upscaling then the PS3but doesn't do netflix or anything like that.

PS3 can do netflix now with a special disc but it, evidently, does not do it very well unless you have a very high speed connection....that will probably change...

I've never found the PS3s upscaling to be that bad....people act as though upscaling a DVD is some kind of Holy Grail....P(Oppo)....get over it! DVDs are DVDs you can only do so much with them....move on to blu-ray and don't worry about a few percent better here a few percent better there!

The fact of the matter is that to me a good progressive scan player LOOKS way more FILM-LIKE than a super SD upscaled version? Scale on yee knights who say nee!

This LG BD player has good performance reviews and does Netflix. It was on sale at BB around Christmas for approx. $250.00, unfortunately they sold out before I could snag one! I'm waiting for them to come down in price again and then one will be mine!:D

I use the PS3 in my set up too and like it a lot. The cons to the PS3 is it doesn't have direct analog outputs and the older ones cannot bitstream DTS-HD and DD true HD, so it must be set to linear pcm. I recently got the Samsung BD-P3600 for my parents and i feel that does a better job of dvd upscaling. That also has 7.1 analog outputs for using the lossless formats with an older receiver (which is what they have). The samsung also has wi-fi with netflix and ability to link to computers on the network to stream music. Also has usb ports to plug in a portable hard drive. (It cost me 200 bucks but was priced for 230)

Googles free PS3 server can stream audio and video wirelessly from any computer on your local network...it is true it cannot do netflix wirelessly without a disc like the XBOX, etc. Since everything has HDMI these days...how much of a drawback is the lack of 7.1 outs?

The lack of analog 7.1 outputs only really matters if you're using a receiver that doesn't support the lossless formats and have HDMI. The 7.1 outs let the blu-ray player do the decoding on its own and sent the already decoded sound directly to the receiver.

I understand that..but very 'few' people here! Don't have at 'least' one AVR or pre that does not have at least HDMI 1.1-1.3? So this is becoming a less and less important 'feature' as time passes.

Oh yeah thats definitely true, as hdmi receivers replace more and more older equipment the analog outs are not very important. But for some people that aren't ready to replace their older receivers it comes into play. I recently brought my parents in the HD age by setting them up with a new tv and blu-ray. They refused to by a new receiver though so getting a BR with analog outs was important for that type of situation.

You would be surprised at how many don't have hdmi 1.3 avr's. personally, I would never buy a componant without analog outputs. Thats just me though. Besides, if you buy anything now with hdmi1.3, it will be dated allready with hdmi1.4 comming out soon. With analog outputs, you don't have to worry about it as much, for the audio side anyway. Analog gives you the option of seperating the audio and video in one machine instead of just combining the two with one hdmi output. Downside in having analog outputs....none...upside is you may not have to invest in a new receiver with every technology change.
