Our kids did several mission trips to Port-au-Prince in their high school years. Under the best of circumstances, things are pretty dire there. I do imagine it's pretty disastrous after a magnitude 7 temblor :-(

A 7.0, only 6 miles deep? Man, that's gonna be bad. Real, real bad. I would estimate a 1/2 a million folks lost their lives today due to this quake. I hope I am wrong. Regardless, what a terrible thing. My thoughts and prayers go out to the citizens of that country and all that may be affected.

Didn't look too bleak when watching the news last evening. Looks like the US must already be on their way to help during this crisis. Canada is also being involved, from what I understand we are to dispatching a team of 200 military soldiers which are specially trained for such crisis. I hope they can act quickly and that other countries will soon get involved and help. Prayers and thoughts sent to survivors and families. Thanks for the donation links provided.

God Bless America for their prompt help in this matter!

Special thanks to our Canadian officials to provide humble help to Haiti during this sad crisis!

    I think there's a bunch of reasons.

First, because such a large percentage of the world is, in fact, so disadvantaged, so it's just good odds.

Second, because those types of places tend to be overcrowded, so when something like this hits it does a lot more damage.

THIRD, places like that are less prepared as far as infrastructure goes; San Francisco is a wealthy area so when a 7.0 earthquake hits, most buildings have been built to handle it. In a poor area, most buildings will just collapse.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

In contrast, I just saw a special about the New Madrid Fault which lies about equidistant between Memphis and Saint Louis. They theorize that when (not if) it goes off again (and historically it registers an estimated 8.0 about every 300 years) that a million square miles of the US will look like a third world country.

Wow, I hope and pray it's not going to be that bad.

There's the knowledge about Yellowstone being a Super volcanic plateau that will decimate the United States also when it blows.

Not that I'm insensitive. Quite the contrary, but I've been looking away from the news on this. I know it's really bad there and this quake hit that island hard. From what I have gathered, thousands of lives have been lost and many are trapped. My heart really goes out to these poor people. This is very sad. :(

That one is true too, and San Andreas is always in play for another big one. We have been very fortunate here in the US. Rebuilding Haiti I guess will be our experience builder.

Looks like it's going to be a bad one down in Haiti. Hope this does not wake up the Charleston, SC fault.

That's right!..I completely forgot about this fault and me being in Wilmington ,I think it runs up through here too. We used to hear super-sonic BOOMS originating around the Cape Fear river and some atributed these to seismic activity from the fault.:(

Prayers and hope still going towards the Haiti people..

This is a great tragedy for what is already and always been one of the poorest economies in the world but has the historical distincton of being the first Independent Black Republic?

What a shame...I hope that we do everything we can to help these poor people!

amazingly sad stories from Haiti. This is huge and will be going on for a long time. The pictures are stunning what those people have and are going through. 37 countries are helping the relief efforts.. but it's not getting there fast enough. I know they are doing everything they can as fast as they can.. but each day more people die.

I've been watching the news some on this today... Just a thought, but, when the Russians blockaded Berlin' the US Air Force's Berlin Airlift Dropped in a Supply Plane and unloaded about 1 per hour around the clock for 45 Days....

Now that my friends is a relief effort...

I fear this is gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets any better

I just was watching a show on the History Channel about that airlift. I think the problem here is there is nowhere to land and all the roads are torn up from the quake.

I agree. It is definitely going to get worse before it gets better. Prayers are definitely the order of the day.

Seeing the number of amputees, and nasty infections really turns my stomach. It doesn't look like they will be seeing the end of this mess for a while.
