I Have an older Onkyo 5-disk. It's a DX-C340. The thing works fine. It does what it was designed to do. It's not the best built player in the world, nor the best sounding, but for the price of admission.... it works. I use mine for a garage/basement system.

You want to conisder the age of the unit....even the best lasers made will probably fail in an average of 8 years...the newest CD lasers have been engineered to fail in about 3 years...planned obsolescence the essence of getting you to buy new. Of course failure will vary according to usage...I'm talking about fairly regular daily usage here!
I'm not sure how old that unit is but I would ask? That's a consideration, though for 35 bucks you don't have much to lose.

I'd say for $35, isn't it worth satisfying your curiosity? Give it a shot, at the very least it will serve you for a secondary system, if you have one. And on the age, my NAD C520 CDP was manufactured in 1999, and I haven't had any issues with it (knocks on wood) and it gets daily use.
