Pfft! I carry full coverage on my truck because anything less, the insurance company hangs me out to dry if I get sued over an accident. My truck is 9 years old. I have a clean driving record and my insurance is still $2100 a year.

Yeah, that's one thing i don't miss about NY.


I carry state minimum mainly because it's cheap, it's legal, and i'll take my chances about getting in an accident. Haven't ever been in one yet, so i'll keep my fingers crossed.

I've got the clean driving record, and my newest car is 18 years old. :D So i'm sure that helps.

Travelers here quoted me almost $2500 a year. I have 21st Century which was AIG before AIG spun off the business.The only other one that is cheaper is Farmer's and it's only $80 a year. It's not worth the hassle to change for $80.

Geico is hilarious. They send me crap every month and even call me because i did an online rate quote. They try to sell me on their insurance. Every month. Every month i let them say their piece, and then when they try to close me, i try to get them to explain what they do for me that Titan doesn't at a far lower price.

I am amused when they can't come up with anything, and then try to close me in the end anyways. "Well, what do you think?"

In Illinois they base part of your premium on your credit score. It says so in the policy............how much it influence's the final premium is anyone's guess.

They can choose not to insure you, and can increase the rate..... They run a credit check every time I run a quote.

Dad seems to think it's legal (he was asst insurance commissioner of this state).

No, they don't go by power levels. They go by engine size and for pickup trucks, GVW.

Farmer's, 21st Century, Progressive, Geico, State Farm and Liberty Mutual all say it's a 5.4L V8. State Farm and Liberty Mutual make no distinction between a Lightning or base model F-150 with a sub 6,000 pound GVW and a heavy duty F-150 with an 8500 pound GVW. That's why they are so much higher.

Prudential and Allstate factor in the 2.0L supercharger and make it 7.4L of effective displacement. Prudential also make no distinction on GVW. That's why they are so much higher.

Allstate covers power levels as well and lists the Lightning as a "specialty vehicle" that requires a "premium on collision parts" which is highway robbery because the sheet metal is no different than a standard cab, short bed, styleside F-150. The urethane bumper cover and sideskirts are no more than the standard bumper and running boards or sidesteps. The rear bumper, grille bezel and grille are actually cheaper than the standard F-150 because they aren't chromed. The only unique collision parts are the light assemblies front and rear and the 3rd eye brake light/cargo light assembly.

They all factor in driving record, age, marital status, credit score and yearly mileage.

It's all bogus crap to screw you out of as much money as they can to hedge their bets. If I stuck with Allstate for 6 years, I would have paid as much in insurance as I did for the truck.

If you're that concerned about wanting a sedan, and are considering the Maxima, maybe look at the Altima as well.. similar car design and it has decent mpg and power at the same time..and is a lot cheaper if you get the 6 cyl engine its around 245 hp also you can find them for decent prices used.. but if I'm not mistaken you're just a college kid.. If you want a coupe, get a coupe you have plenty of time before you need a sedan and by the time you have kids, you'll likely be ready for a new car anyway... That being said, if you have a ton of CC debt.. stay in your little civic and pay that off first.. You've gotten a lot of new gear lately too based on your threads... maybe you should chill out on the spending pay down your debt and then think about a new car.

Why would it be cheaper if you get the 6cyl engine? The maxima only offers a 6 cyl, and the altima has a 2.5L I4...Which would be cheaper not more.

On another note, I have a 2009 Cadillac CTS FE3 and love it. It's got 2700miles on it and so far it drives great. Car of the yeaer 2008. High price however, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone wanting to *SAVE* money. Ironically I bought it to save money over my 2006 Cadillac STS...and I do. Financed it 0% for 72mo.

Bought the GF a 2006 Infiniti G35 for 13,800 2 weeks after, and I looove the car. Always wanted one, and Infiniti has the best service out there. Parts are expensive however, but I've have very few failures on Nissan products. The new altima with the CVT however has had problems with the transmission blowinig up at or around 30k miles. Beware of that transmission.

Before the 2 cadillacs I had an Infiniti I30t (Maxima) and it lasted 80k miles with only 1 major rework. Total cost of repair for 7 years was maybe 1200. Drove great and looked great.

Sorry not going to get a gm car and infinty is out of the price range not to mention insurance.

I didn't realize he was so young. If you're young and at home, don't buy a new car at all. It's not that you don't deserve it, it's that a) you don't need it and b) when you move out you don't want to be saddled with a car payment. Trust me on that one. I bought my full loaded 2006 STS when I lived at home ($59,975 sticker) and I could afford it because I was making big bucks with no bills.... My mistake. After buying a house and having bills it was a waste of money. The thrill of having it did not even come close to giving up that much money a month. At your age... get a car for point A to point b.

Keep the Civic bro, it'll last you forever if you treat it right. I wish I would have kept my old paid off truck instead of buying that brand new F150 when I was 18. Actually I have to say mine my sisters AND my mothers have all had there trans replaced. Very poor auto trans in the year cars we have. Mine is a 03 sisters is a 04 and moms is a 05. All 3 have had the trans replaced. My sister and mine have both had head gaskets replaced as well. Our older civic was more reliable than these. None the less I enjoy my civic just know that the trans problem will probably be back.

If the Civic is paid off, just keep it. When the transmission dies, dump a manual in there an drive it another 200k miles. :) Keeping that car is your best financial choice.

Way cheaper than a new car. If you're going to pay someone to do it, maybe $3k? Get on the Honda forums, and i'm sure you could get someone to do it for you for around a grand including parts.

How half ass can it be? Take the parts from a manual car, remove the auto crap, and bolt in manual stuff.

The car came with manual transmission, so it's easy to make it look like factory.

You're a pretty handy guy, I've seen your installs. You could easily replace that little tranny yourself for less than 1K, without a lift. Car payments suck man, trust me, my truck costs $520 a month. Thats my RTiA5's and an Outback dinner every month. Keep the civic

You are forgetting the new wring harnesses to be ran to the engine bay the new ecu the stuff under the car. I have talked to people before about it. They said it would be around 3,500-4 grand. Which is not bad luckily my dash already has a tachometer so I am good there. Also the new center pieces for the shift knob and boot. That might be an option buy why dump 4 grand when I have already dumped over 5 grand into it for a head gasket and new trans?
